My partner and I moved into our apartment complex in October of last year and there was a cat who greeted us as we were moving in. I thought it was a stray but then noticed it hanging out by a food and water bowl on a particular balcony pretty often. I would also see him hanging outside of this apartment and waiting at the door and being let in occasionally.

Flash forward, and now I’ve only ever seen him outside for months and not ever at that unit. He is out everytime I’m outside regardless of day or night. Just recently I let him inside because it has been storming pretty bad and he was left getting soaked outside. I’ve also been providing him food and water for about a month now. There are also a few other people here who leave food outside for him. One of the neighbors told us that his owners (the unit he used to go to) started putting him outside because they had a new baby and didn’t want to deal with the cat. I left a note on their door about a week ago and told them that I was considering taking him in but I was informed that he may be their cat and if he was that they could contact me to let me know. They were gone for about 3 days and I was the only one feeding and giving water to the cat. When they got back they grabbed my note (3-4 days ago) and have yet to contact me.

I’m just wondering where do I go from this now? Should I just continue to wait for them to contact me? I worry about him because we live in an area heavily populated with coyotes as well as just weather and what not.
