First off: We have already consulted both our usual vet and a cat neurologist. The neurologist is very busy so it might take a while until they can get back to us for an appointment.
I am asking here for similar experiences or ideas from vets who frequent this subreddit.
Hello everyone!
Our cat Anubis is almost 2 years old and a rescue. His left front leg was amputated when he was a kitten due to being deformed, no idea if he got injured or born like that.
Last spring he started developing health issues, which got successfully treated by the vet.
Last year around September he started showing these muscle twitches, like in the video. In November/December it stopped. Only a few weeks ago did they start again.
They look like those typical “dreaming”-twitches, that animals have. They would start in his left thigh and move onto the rest of his body, especially when he is resting. Would usually last around 30-40 minutes.
When he had this for the very first time, we thought he was having a seizure and went to an emergency vet who declared him healthy. Our usual vet also did a full blood screening and FIV/FIP test additionally to supplementing him with electrolytes. All the results pointed to a perfectly healthy cat. We also got rid of all possible toxins in our home and switched his diet to more nutritious food. Eventually the twitches stopped occuring until they started again a few weeks ago.
He is fully conscious during these “attacks”. In the midst of them he would get up, want to be pet and purr and be eager to play too. We have no idea what it is as it’s obviously no seizures (his pupil reaction is also normal).
Shortly after this video was taken he also got up and wanted to be pet, picked up and played with. We even tried stretching his back legs as we assumed he might have muscle cramps from the adjusted way of walking (three-legged). However those usually would be fixed by supplementing electrolytes, which he is not lacking (according to his blood work).
Both our vet and us are fully stumped on what this might be, so we consulted a neurologist. However since they are fully booked and he is not an emergency, it might be a while until we can get an appointment. We did send them the video with details as well.
I thought I might post this on here for additional ideas.
Does anyone here have experience with something similar or work in the veterinarian field and can give us at least a rough idea of what we might be dealing with?
Thank you so much in advance.
