A bit of a rant
I had to drop out of college due to financial aid issues, so I’ve been a low wage earner. The most I’ve been able to make is $17.40 an hour, and that was at a call center. Going back to college is difficult because most places I’ve worked have refused to work with me on scheduling, often telling me to wait until overtime ends and then they will think about it. Even skilling up has met with massive amounts of resistance, as I was threatened with my job if I took the A+ and Network+ tests. Turns out, doing that was a waste of time since I needed a Computer Science degree to go with them.
I know part of my issue is that I don’t interview well due to being autistic. They likely see it, leading to a low ball or radio silence after. I recently had an interview where they ended it due to my answer to “where do you see yourself in 5 years” which was “I aim to be in a higher position than the one I am being hired for by that time.” I should know by now that such jobs do not like ambition after one of my old bosses called me a communist for asking what I needed to do so that I could earn advancement. How could I improve as an employee? On top of that, they publicly shamed me, telling everyone at the plant meeting that I thought I was too good to work production. I was good enough to train my boss every time they promoted someone else, though.
1099 Jobs are plentiful and easy to get interviews, usually with Aflac, Globe Life, etc but that opens up a massive can of worms. It’s sales, 100% commission. Apparently it could be months until you get your first paycheck, since they give you cold leads right out of the gate.
It’s all frustrating, it must be harder for people more specialized in their skillset, I can appreciate that.
