I took a counteroffer to stay at my current company and while everyone was thrilled that I’m staying, I feel like something is off? (To note, I wasn’t looking to leave. I was just contacted pretty excessively by external recruiters.)
My manager scheduled a team meeting, so we can brainstorm and improve our processes since there must’ve been a reason that I “looked” elsewhere in the first place. This was meant to happen in person, in my manager’s office, since we are based out of two different locations.
Last night, she cancelled the meeting an hour before the end of the day. I had booked travel to get there and couldn’t get the whole thing refunded, so I figured I would do a trip down there anyway and get lunch and dinner with a few friends. They still asked me to cancel my travel, even though I already made other plans. I called my manager to tell her the cost would be on me, since I wanted to still come down to see the other folks, but she was pretty adamant on cancelling.
One of the biggest reasons I even entertained the conversation is because I’m the only one who does what I do and my entire department sits in other offices. I barely have anyone to talk to and I feel like my managers never have time for me.
Did your colleagues behavior change when you took a counter to stay?
