I recently got a verbal offer for a Marketing Manager role at a nonprofit, and I’m trying to figure out if I messed up or if I avoided something.
The job description was pretty vague, so before moving forward I asked a few follow-up questions to better understand the role. I asked about things like:
whether I’d be expected to handle fundraising/sponsorships since there wasn’t a development role listed
if the focus was mainly events/social media or also reporting/analytics
how much of their marketing work is currently outsourced vs being brought in-house
what onboarding/support looks like and how success in the role is measured
and I did ask about a revenue dip I noticed in their 990s (just to understand if it was timing vs something bigger)
I wasn’t trying to be difficult I just wanted clarity because the role seemed broad and I didn’t want to walk into something misaligned.
After I asked those questions, the offer ended up getting rescinded.
Now I’m overthinking it. Were my questions too much for the verbal offer stage? Or is this a sign that the organization didn’t have clear expectations?
Would really appreciate insight from hiring managers or anyone who’s been in a similar situation.
