Opioid manufacturer Purdue Pharma LP (Purdue) was sentenced today in federal court in Newark, New Jersey, and ordered to pay criminal penalties of over $5 billion for its role in fueling the opioid epidemic.

    This fine is the closest I’ve seen a court get to actually punishing a megacorp. These companies just see fines as a cost of doing business these days, $5B is actually the first significant fine I’ve seen levied by a court in the United States so far.
