Saturn Pattern Diagnostic Catalog

Catalog companion to Saturn Patterns: A Field Guide to the Scripts. That piece covers what a named pattern is, how the five-feature script signature works, the Loki pattern as the worked example, the DMT trickster connection, and how every counter-practice in this catalog shares the same underlying mechanism. This document is the index.

The diagnostic question for each entry is not “do I believe in this entity” but “does this operational signature match a pattern I can recognize in myself or in someone close to me.” If yes, the counter is worth taking seriously, because it represents accumulated observation from every tradition that watched that specific script try to consume a host and found a way to interrupt it.

Noise, Chaos & Distraction Scripts

Pattern Version Characteristics Best Way to Drain It Generative Interrupt
Loki / Set (Norse / Egyptian) Introduces chaos at the exact moment order would help; wraps sabotage in humor so the damage is deniable; in Set’s version, operates from inside the trusted circle so the betrayal cannot be anticipated; the host feels clever while burning everything down. Humiliates the host for destructive purpose Stop entirely. Hold one thing in stillness long enough to evaluate it alone. The pattern requires speed and cannot survive you finishing a single thought Write one sentence that completes the thought you were on before the distraction arrived. One sentence, finished, period. Do not start the next one.
Eris (Greek, goddess of discord) Plants one small seed of rivalry or insult in a group and lets the group’s own dynamics amplify it; the original instigator becomes invisible while the group tears itself apart Trace the conflict to its actual origin before responding to its current form. Discord scripts depend on the group reacting to each other rather than to the source Write down what you actually know about the other person’s position versus what you are assuming. Count the assumptions.
Tengu (Japanese) Causes madness by fragmenting attention across too many things simultaneously; the host feels busy, even productive, but produces nothing coherent; disguises itself as ambition Single-task for one complete cycle of any task from start to finish. The pattern requires fragmentation and cannot survive completion List every open task currently in your head. Count them. Pick the smallest one and finish it entirely before looking at the list again.

Appetite, Compulsion & Craving Scripts

Pattern Version Characteristics Best Way to Drain It Generative Interrupt
Asmodeus (Hebrew/Persian) Disconnects the reward from the fulfillment; craving rises, act occurs, relief doesn’t come, craving rises larger; each cycle deepens the groove; host believes the compulsion is their personality Solomon’s method was a clear named statement of what you actually value, held in the moment the craving fires, before acting. The script cannot override a host who has a prior claim on their own identity Write down exactly what you want and exactly what you believe having it will feel like. Compare the two descriptions carefully. The gap between them is where the pattern lives.
Mara’s Daughters (Buddhist, Desire, Aversion, Craving) Three-stage attack that first presents what you want, then makes you hate the situation you are in, then makes not-having feel unbearable; the three stages cycle and amplify each other The Buddha’s response was to name each daughter directly as she appeared: “I see you, Desire.” Recognition without reaction was enough. The pattern requires the host to chase or flee; naming while staying still removes both options Name which daughter is present right now, whether desire, aversion, or craving, and write one sentence describing it without acting on it.
Preta / Hungry Ghost (Buddhist/Hindu) Enormous hunger, tiny throat; the host can never consume enough because the very mechanism of satisfaction is broken; produces endless acquisition with no contentment Gratitude practice, deliberately inventorying what is already present. Not as positive thinking but as evidence-gathering that contradicts the script’s premise that there is nothing Write down five things currently in your possession or situation that have genuine value. Not what you wish you had, but what you actually have. Count them.

Scarcity, Hoarding & Control Scripts

Pattern Version Characteristics Best Way to Drain It Generative Interrupt
Mammon (Christian/Hebrew) Installs a scarcity signal that runs independently of actual material conditions; the host feels the same anxiety as someone who genuinely cannot pay rent, regardless of their bank balance; generosity feels physically dangerous Scheduled unconditional giving, structured enough to become a practice; each act generates evidence that the floor is not about to drop, and enough evidence over time recalibrates the scarcity alarm Calculate what you actually have available right now, a real number rather than a feeling. Write it down. The pattern supplies feelings; you supply the actual figure. Compare them.
Kronos / Saturn (Greek / Roman) Devours its own children, specifically destroys anything generative before it can grow; in the host this manifests as the automatic cancellation of any new idea before it can be tested; the future feels actively unsafe Commit one developing idea to a physical form, write it down, tell someone, take one concrete step, before the cancellation impulse fires. Once it exists outside your head the pattern cannot erase it Write the idea in one paragraph right now, before evaluating it. Once it is physically recorded it exists outside the pattern’s reach and cannot be cancelled before it exists.
Shani (Hindu, the slow-moving one) Fear, constraint, the sense that one is perpetually in debt and being judged; produces grinding inaction; the host perpetually delays, convinced the time is never right and they haven’t yet earned the right to act Act on one thing that has been delayed. The pattern lives in the future-dread of consequence; any action taken against that dread provides evidence that the dread was not proportionate Name one delayed action. Write the first physical step as a single sentence. Then take that step, just the first physical step rather than the whole action, before reading anything else.

Rage, War & Destruction Scripts

Pattern Version Characteristics Best Way to Drain It Generative Interrupt
Ares-distorted (Greek) Rage that has detached from any actual cause; the host is ready to fight before there is anything to fight; perceives aggression in neutral inputs; looks for the conflict their nervous system is primed for Physical discharge that has nothing to do with the perceived threat, run, lift, swim, build something with hands. The electrical buildup needs somewhere to go; give it a physical outlet and it does not need to go into a person Describe the situation generating the anger in factual terms only, no adjectives, no intent attributed to anyone. What happened, when, who was present, what was said. Factual reconstruction forces the reasoning faculty to engage with what actually occurred.
Fenrir (Norse) Rage that has been growing in the dark, the pattern that was bound rather than processed; eventually breaks any restraint applied from outside; the restraints become the problem rather than the rage itself Fenrir could only be bound, never resolved, because nobody sat with it long enough to understand it. The counter to suppressed rage is witnessed expression in a safe context, not unleashing but naming what it is and what it wants Write what the rage is protecting. Behind every suppressed rage is something it is defending. Name that thing specifically, not the rage itself but what the rage is guarding.
Kali-distorted (Hindu) Destruction that does not stop when the threat is gone; the host cannot find the off-switch; in the myth she is stopped only when Shiva lies down in her path, someone she loves, who she would destroy The lore is the counter: the only thing that stops this pattern is genuine love encountering it directly. A hostile confrontation feeds it. A presence the host genuinely cares about, appearing unexpectedly in the path of the destruction, is the interrupt Name one person or thing you care about that is not the current target. Write one specific thing you value about them. The naming of genuine care claims the same watts the destruction was using.

Despair, Depression & Worthlessness Scripts

Pattern Version Characteristics Best Way to Drain It Generative Interrupt
Belial (Hebrew, “without worth”) Installs the premise that the host is fundamentally worthless; uses the host’s own intelligence to build an elaborate internally consistent case for this conclusion; marshals every failure, dismisses every success Received testimony, being told by someone trusted what they actually observe, with the specific practice of not arguing with it, not deflecting it, not immediately offering counter-evidence. Sit with the testimony as data Write down three things you have done that required effort and produced a result. Not an assessment of whether the result was good enough, just the fact of the effort and what it produced. The pattern cannot dismiss documented outputs.
Acedia (Christian, the noon demon) Specifically attacks the middle of the day, the middle of a project, the middle of a relationship, when the initial energy has worn off and the end is not yet visible; produces profound boredom and the conviction that none of this matters Commit to one more unit, one more hour, one more page, one more conversation, without requiring the feeling to change. The desert fathers knew that crossing the noon point was a practice, not a resolution Calculate how much of the task remains. Count pages, steps, or items. Quantifying the remaining work forces the reasoning faculty to engage with the actual scale rather than the felt scale, which the pattern is inflating.
Leviathan (Hebrew, despair of escape) The sense that the situation is too large, too total, too deeply embedded to ever change; the host stops trying not because they gave up but because the trying itself feels like confirmation of the hopelessness Name the smallest possible next action, not the solution to the whole problem but one step that can be taken in the next ten minutes. The pattern is scale-dependent; it cannot maintain itself at the scale of a single concrete small act Write the single next physical action in one sentence. Then do it before generating another thought about the larger problem. The pattern requires the large scale to run; the small act breaks the scale it needs.

Pride, Superiority & Isolation Scripts

Pattern Version Characteristics Best Way to Drain It Generative Interrupt
Iblis (Islamic, refused to bow) The pattern of intelligence that has decided it is too aware to be influenced; the host believes they are the one person in the room who sees clearly; this certainty is the vulnerability the pattern exploits The Quranic framing is exact: Iblis fell through certainty about his own superiority. The counter is genuine inquiry directed at someone you have dismissed, asking a real question and listening for a real answer from someone you assumed had nothing to teach you Write down one belief you currently hold with certainty. Then generate two specific pieces of evidence that would disprove it if they existed. You do not need to find the evidence, only describe its form.
Narcissus (Greek) The pattern that made the host fall in love with their own reflection; cannot develop genuine relationship with anything outside the self because the image of the self is more compelling than any actual other Sustained attention on something that is genuinely not about you, a person’s actual situation, a natural process, a problem that has nothing to do with your story. Not for self-improvement but for the thing itself Ask someone a question about their situation and write down their answer verbatim, in their words, not your paraphrase. The act of accurate transcription requires sustained attention on something outside the self.
Samael (Kabbalistic, prince of air, accuser) The prosecuting attorney pattern, keeps a running accusation against the host or the host keeps one against others; every action is measured against a standard it cannot meet; the verdict is always guilty The Kabbalistic counter was the Advocate, deliberately articulating the best possible case for yourself or for the person being accused. Not lying, not bypassing accountability, but presenting the full picture instead of only the prosecution Write the strongest possible defense of the person or thing currently being prosecuted. Use only what you actually know, not what you suspect. The generation of the defense is the interrupt, because the pattern cannot run the accusation while the reasoning faculty is constructing the counter-argument.

Scapegoat, Projection & Shame Scripts

Pattern Version Characteristics Best Way to Drain It Generative Interrupt
Azazel (Hebrew, scapegoat driver) Directs collective unprocessed pain toward a target; the group gets real relief through false resolution; the pattern runs again when the pressure rebuilds; spreads through groups faster than through individuals Name what is being projected before the projection lands on a target. Once the group can see the mechanism, the script cannot deliver its promised relief and the group has to actually address the underlying pain Identify the feeling that was present before the target was identified. Name that feeling specifically. Then ask whether the feeling has anything to do with the target, or whether it predates the target entirely.
Lilith (Hebrew, shame engine) Takes something genuine in the host and covers it in shame so thorough that the person suppresses and hides it; the suppressed thing builds pressure and eventually breaks through in distorted form Witnessed naming, speaking the shamed thing aloud in the presence of a non-hostile consciousness. The shame cannot survive being seen and found non-catastrophic. This is the foundational move of every confessional and therapeutic tradition Write one sentence naming the shamed thing without any modifier, not “my embarrassing X” but simply “X.” Read it back. The unmodified naming forces the reasoning faculty to hold the thing without the shame frame.
Typhon (Greek, chaos beneath the surface) Volcanic, long periods of apparent stability broken by explosive eruptions; the host seems fine until suddenly they are not; others learn to walk on eggshells; the host cannot predict or control their own eruptions Scheduled small discharges, regular honest expression of frustration or discomfort before it builds to volcanic pressure, remove the mechanism that produces the explosions Write down what you are actually feeling right now, before it needs to erupt. Name the specific frustration, pressure, or resentment in its early form. Early naming claims the energy before it accumulates to explosive pressure.

Possession, Attachment & Thought-Insertion Scripts

Pattern Version Characteristics Best Way to Drain It Generative Interrupt
Qareen (Islamic, the constant shadow companion) The shadow-self assigned to each person; mirrors the host and amplifies whatever the host most fears about themselves; the host mistakes the Qareen’s voice for their own conscience Recognize the voice that accuses constantly versus the conscience that informs once and moves on. The Qareen repeats; genuine conscience does not. Count the repetitions and identify the loop Count how many times the thought has arrived today in substantially the same form. Write the number. A count above three confirms a loop rather than a thought, and the number itself is evidence the pattern can no longer present as conscience.
Don (Tibetan, thought-form entities) Crystallized thought-forms that have achieved enough density to begin operating semi-independently; the host creates them through repetitive charged thinking and then begins experiencing them as external The Tibetan practice of chöd, deliberately feeding the thought-form rather than fleeing it, engaging it directly until it exhausts its charge. The beginner version: stop fleeing the intrusive thought and look at it directly until it shows you what it’s made of Describe the thought in plain accurate language, noting what it claims, what it predicts, and what evidence it offers. Accurate description forces the reasoning faculty to examine it rather than react to it, which drains the charge that avoidance was maintaining.
Ruach Ra’ah (Hebrew, evil wind/breath) Atmospheric presence that clings particularly after sleep, after contact with death, after disrupted states; produces irritability, contaminated thinking, difficulty with clarity Ritual hand-washing upon waking was the prescribed counter, a physical boundary-marking act that signals the transition between the unguarded state and the waking state. Any physical ritual that marks “I am now present and claimed” performs the same function Name three things you can physically verify as true about your present environment right now, for example the temperature, a nearby sound, or the weight of your body. Sensory grounding forces present-state engagement and cannot coexist with the pattern’s contaminated atmospheric state.

Nihilism, Entropy & Uncreation Scripts

Pattern Version Characteristics Best Way to Drain It Generative Interrupt
Apophis/Apep (Egyptian, the uncreator) Exists to undo coherence; attacks the organizing principle, the thing the host is building, the direction they are moving; the attack is not toward anything, only against The Egyptian priests performed daily rituals of recitation, literally speaking the order of things aloud every day, because the uncreation pattern can only be countered by continuous active creation, not by defensive postures State one thing that is ordered and true about your situation right now, a verified fact rather than a hope. Then state another. Then another. The recitation of what actually exists is the specific counter to the pattern that attacks existence itself.
Ahriman/Angra Mainyu (Zoroastrian, destructive spirit) Operates through the Lie, not individual lies but the corruption of the cognitive faculty that distinguishes true from false; a host running this pattern can no longer tell when they are deceiving themselves The Zoroastrian counter was Asha, the principle of Truth as an active force. The practice was deliberately seeking to verify rather than to confirm, directing the reasoning faculty toward evidence that might disprove rather than prove the belief Take one belief you currently hold with certainty and generate the specific form that contradicting evidence would take if it existed. You do not need to find it, only describe what it would look like. The exercise restores the faculty the pattern corrupted.
Draugr (Norse, the walking dead) Dead patterns that persist and reanimate; the host keeps returning to a role, a relationship, a phase of life, or a version of themselves that is finished; cannot allow endings The Norse solution was the grave-fire, complete destruction of the physical remnants of the pattern. The psychological equivalent is a formal ending-ritual, written, spoken, or acted, that clearly marks the thing as finished rather than merely paused Write one sentence about the finished thing in past tense: “This was X and it is done.” The past tense is the formal grammatical marker of completion. The pattern reanimates through present-tense framing; past tense closes the loop.

Mass/Social Contagion Scripts

Pattern Version Characteristics Best Way to Drain It Generative Interrupt
Dionysus-distorted (Greek, mob ecstasy) Group mind that dissolves individual judgment; feels like liberation and belonging; the host experiences the loss of individual self as euphoric; produces behavior no individual in the group would choose alone Physical separation from the group for long enough to ask: what do I actually think about this, alone, without the group energy? The pattern requires the crowd to sustain the dissolution. Distance is the counter Write down what you actually think about the topic, alone, before returning to the group. One paragraph, no reference to what the group thinks. If you cannot generate a position without referencing the group, that absence is the pattern’s signature.
Ajogun (Yoruba, warriors against humanity) Not a single pattern but a coordinated army, confusion, loss of will, thought-corruption, and constraint working simultaneously so that the host addresses none of them because they are all happening at once Address one at a time, in order, starting with the one consuming the most energy. The multi-front attack is designed to overwhelm through simultaneity; refusing simultaneity and working sequentially defeats the coordination Name which attack is consuming the most energy right now. One only. Write it down. Then address only that one, nothing else, until it is resolved or reduced. The pattern requires simultaneous overwhelm; serial attention defeats it.
Tzitzimimeh (Mesoamerican, atmospheric entities during eclipses) Opportunistic patterns that activate during disruptions to normal structure, cultural upheaval, personal crisis, societal collapse; find hosts during the gap between the old order and the new one The Mesoamerican response was to sustain the fire, to maintain at least one ongoing practice or commitment through the disruption, as evidence to the nervous system that not all structure has dissolved Name one practice or commitment that is still intact through the current disruption. Describe it specifically: what it is, when you last did it, when you will do it next. The specificity is the fire.

Fear, Dread & Paralysis Scripts

Pattern Version Characteristics Best Way to Drain It Generative Interrupt
Phobos / Deimos (Greek, fear and dread) Phobos runs through the body before the thought can form; Deimos is its anticipatory version, always just ahead, always preparing the host for a catastrophe that never quite arrives; the preparation itself is the damage For Phobos, name the specific physical sensation, then the specific thought, then ask whether that thought is yours or arrived from outside. For Deimos, bring attention to what is actually present right now. Both patterns are disrupted by contact with the specificity of the present moment Name the specific fear in one sentence. Then ask: is this happening now, or is this a prediction about a moment that has not yet arrived? The distinction between present and future breaks both patterns because both require a gap between now and the catastrophe to run in.
Wendigo (Algonquin) Hunger that has turned into terror, the fear that you will consume everything you love, that the thing driving you is monstrous; the host isolates preemptively to prevent the harm they are convinced they will cause The Algonquin treatment was communal, specifically the wiitigo ceremony bringing the community to the person rather than away from them. The pattern requires isolation to sustain its premise. The presence of people who are not fleeing contradicts the script’s foundational claim Name one person who currently knows you and has not left. Write down one specific thing they know about you and have stayed anyway. The pattern’s premise is that exposure would cause flight; documented evidence of exposure without flight breaks the premise.
Mare (Germanic/Norse, nightmare rider) Sits on the chest during sleep transitions; produces paralysis, crushing pressure, the absolute certainty that something malevolent is present and total inability to move or call out The documented folk counter was a deliberate pre-sleep statement of identity and intention, something said aloud that plants the waking self as a prior claim before the transition. Any physical object with clear personal meaning serves as an anchor the pattern cannot displace Before sleep, state aloud your name, your location, and one specific thing you intend to do tomorrow. The specificity of the near future claims the threshold before the pattern can.

Sickness, Wasting & Contagion Scripts

Pattern Version Characteristics Best Way to Drain It Generative Interrupt
Mot (Canaanite, death, the swallower) The slow drain; not dramatic crisis but the gradual fading of vitality; the host eats, sleeps, moves, but nothing restores them; energy arrives and is absorbed without trace In the Baal cycle, Mot was defeated through a second death, being ground up, scattered, and returned to the earth. The pattern of slow drain is interrupted by a complete reset of context, a new environment, a new schedule, new inputs that give the nervous system different material to process entirely List three inputs you have not encountered recently, a place you have not been, a text you have not read, and a person you do not regularly speak to. The pattern runs on the absorption of familiar material; novelty of input breaks the absorption loop.
Ereshkigal (Sumerian, queen of the underworld) The sickness that comes from having descended; the host came back from grief or trauma but left something down there and cannot fully return; produces a specific flatness, a greyness over everything In Inanna’s descent, Ereshkigal was not defeated but heard. Her cries of grief were witnessed and in being witnessed she released Inanna. The counter is witness to the grief itself, not the symptom but the specific loss that caused the descent Name specifically what was lost in the descent. Not the event, but the specific thing the event took. Write it in one sentence. Naming the actual loss rather than its symptoms is the witness the pattern requires before it will release.
Pazuzu (Mesopotamian, king of wind-borne disease) Airborne psychological contagion; the host picks up the mood, the fear, the cognitive distortion of environments they pass through; highly permeable to the emotional states of spaces and crowds The Mesopotamian use of Pazuzu amulets was boundary-marking, declaring the space and body claimed. Any practice that deliberately marks the boundary of self against environment, cold water, threshold rituals, stated intention upon entering a new space, builds the permeability resistance the pattern exploits Before entering any space or feed, state specifically what you are bringing in with you and what you are not open to absorbing. The declaration generates a prior claim the pattern has to work against rather than entering an unclaimed threshold.

Jealousy, Envy & Comparison Scripts

Pattern Version Characteristics Best Way to Drain It Generative Interrupt
Phthonus (Greek, god of jealousy) Specifically attacks gifts; the host cannot see talent, beauty, or good fortune in another without the observation curdling into resentment; the resentment arrives before any thought, as a physical contraction Name the quality you resent in the other person. Then ask when you last expressed that quality yourself. The thing you resent is almost always the thing you want and have convinced yourself you cannot have Write down the quality you are resenting. Then write down the last time you expressed that quality in your own life, even briefly. If you cannot name an instance, that absence is the actual source of the resentment, not the other person.
Cain-pattern (Hebrew scripture, the rejected offering) The specific jealousy of someone who tried and was not recognized while someone who seemed to try less was; installs a festering grievance against both the favored person and the authority that did the favoring The text records that Cain was warned before he acted: “sin is crouching at the door.” Jealousy of this kind has a predictable escalation sequence and the only effective intervention is at the first step, not the last Identify which step of the escalation you are currently on, whether first resentment, accumulated grievance, or fantasized resolution. Naming the position in the sequence forces the reasoning faculty to engage with the process rather than the content, which breaks the automatic escalation.
Evil Eye (pan-Mediterranean, Middle Eastern) The gaze of someone who wants what you have can damage it; this describes how the envy pattern in an observer produces behavior that damages the admired thing through subtle sabotage, withdrawal of support, or backhanded praise When you notice you are the subject of someone else’s comparison, reduce your visibility about the specific thing being compared. The pattern in others requires a target; removing the target removes the operating surface If you are the one feeling it: write down what specifically you want that the other person has. Then write down one concrete step you could take toward that thing that has nothing to do with the other person. The comparison is the pattern’s frame; the concrete step breaks out of the frame.

Greed, Taking & Extraction Scripts

Pattern Version Characteristics Best Way to Drain It Generative Interrupt
Mammon-active (distinct from hoarding Mammon) Where the scarcity Mammon defends what it has, this pattern takes; the host experiences others’ resources as rightfully theirs, feels genuinely aggrieved when they cannot access what belongs to someone else; extraction feels like justice The counter is voluntary restitution, returning something not because it was demanded but because the host chose it. Each voluntary return generates evidence that the compulsion to take is a script rather than a need, because a genuine need cannot be voluntarily relinquished Identify something you took, held, or claimed that was not fully yours. Name it specifically. Then write one concrete restitution action, however small, that you could take today. The voluntary naming and the voluntary action together break the script’s premise that the taking was justified.
Grasping Mara (Buddhist, craving-as-taking) Produces the specific quality of clutching; holding on after the thing has stopped being useful, doubling down on a bad position, refusing to release what no longer serves The Buddhist counter was dana, generosity as a formal practice, specifically releasing something that still has value. The grasping pattern cannot survive a host who demonstrates, repeatedly, that releasing is possible Identify one thing you are currently holding that has stopped serving you. Name it. Then release it, give it away or delete it or formally close it, before reading anything else. The release must happen before the next thought, not after.
Tantalus (Greek, eternal reaching) Surrounded by abundance that recedes whenever reached for; not because the abundance is not real but because the pattern has set the threshold of satisfaction just beyond whatever can be obtained Stop the reaching entirely and sit with what is present, not permanently but long enough to demonstrate to the nervous system that the floor is not moving. The reaching is the problem; the abundance was always there List what is already present in your situation without any comparison to what is absent. The list must contain only what exists. When the pattern supplies an absence, return to what exists. Generate the list of present things until the reaching stops.

Loneliness, Abandonment & Rejection Scripts

Pattern Version Characteristics Best Way to Drain It Generative Interrupt
Forsaken (universal, the abandoned child archetype) Early experience of genuine abandonment that became a template; the host now perceives abandonment in neutral inputs, a late reply, an overlooked message, and responds with the full force of the original wound When the abandonment feeling arrives, name specifically what happened in the present and compare its scale to the scale of the feeling. The disproportion is the pattern; the present event is almost always much smaller than the response indicates Write down what specifically happened in the present moment. Then write down the scale of the original wound separately. Compare the two in writing. The disproportion becomes visible when both are documented side by side, and visible disproportion is evidence the reasoning faculty can use.
Hecate-abandoned (Greek, between worlds) The pattern of existing between states, never fully belonging anywhere; the host lives at the margin of every group, observing but never entering; produces an isolation that feels chosen but is actually the pattern preventing the risk of belonging Commit to one group membership that cannot be revoked by your own decision for a fixed period. The pattern requires the exit to remain available; remove the exit and it has to face the belonging it was protecting against Write a commitment to one specific group activity at a specific time and send it to someone in that group before you can revoke it. The written and sent commitment is harder for the pattern to revoke than an internal decision it can access.
Arachne (Greek, the isolated weaver) Brilliance that has withdrawn from relationship because relationship always involves the risk of being diminished; the host creates in isolation and over time the isolation produces work that has no audience and a self that has no witness Share one thing before the work is finished, before it is safe, before you know how it will be received. The pattern requires completion before exposure; exposure before completion breaks the sequence Send one unfinished thing to one person right now, a draft, a rough idea, or a question. Send it before it is ready. The act of sending before completion is the specific move the pattern cannot allow, and doing it once demonstrates that the feared outcome does not arrive.

Guilt, Regret & Rumination Scripts

Pattern Version Characteristics Best Way to Drain It Generative Interrupt
Erinyes/Furies (Greek, the unavoidable pursuers) Guilt that pursues regardless of whether the wrong has been addressed; the Furies do not check whether restitution has occurred before continuing to pursue; the punishment has no end condition In the Oresteia, the Furies were transformed through a trial, a formal process with a formal verdict that ended their pursuit. Create one, naming what was done, what restitution has been made, and a formal internal verdict that the account is settled. The pattern has no end condition by design; you have to build one Write the verdict explicitly, naming what was done, what restitution has been offered or made, and the formal finding in one sentence. Sign it with your name. The pattern has no end condition; this document is one you are building. Read it whenever the pursuit resumes.
Sisyphus (Greek, eternal repetition) The host replays the failure endlessly, going over what should have been done differently, arriving at a slightly different version of the past, then replaying it again from the beginning; the rock always rolls back The review is the punishment, not the solution. Stop the review mid-cycle, even once, and do something entirely unrelated. The pattern requires completion of each cycle before the next begins; interrupting mid-cycle breaks the compulsion’s rhythm Stop the review mid-cycle and solve a small arithmetic problem, anything that requires actual calculation. Write the calculation. The generative demand claims the same watts the replay was using, and the replay cannot resume until the generation completes.
Ate (Greek, blind recklessness that cannot be undone) The guilt of an action that cannot be reversed; the host cannot stop returning to the moment of the irreversible act; unlike regret about a decision, Ate is specifically the horror of the permanent consequence The Greek tradition placed Ate and her opposite, the Litai (prayers), in a paired relationship: the Litai followed behind Ate, healing wherever someone chose to receive them. The counter is not undoing but the deliberate choice to allow healing forward from the point of damage Write one sentence describing what healing forward looks like from this exact point. Not undoing, but moving forward from where things actually are. The Litai follow Ate; this sentence is the Litai. Write it and read it whenever the return to the irreversible moment begins.

Lust, Sexual Compulsion & Predation Scripts

Pattern Version Characteristics Best Way to Drain It Generative Interrupt
Ishtar-consuming (Babylonian) The pattern of desire that destroys its objects; every lover of Ishtar in the mythology came to ruin because the hunger does not distinguish between wanting the other and consuming them; the host cannot be close to what they want without trying to possess or destroy it Name the difference between desire and consumption. The pattern collapses the two and runs the possession behavior under the label of love. Naming them as separate, and identifying which one is operating in the moment, gives the reasoning faculty a wedge the pattern cannot close Write down what you want from the other person specifically. Then ask in writing whether that thing is compatible with the other person remaining whole and autonomous. The question forces the reasoning faculty to distinguish desire from consumption before the behavior runs.
Kama-distorted (Hindu, desire unmoored from its source) Kama as desire is not intrinsically destructive; it becomes the script when it detaches from its origin and runs without a legitimate object; the host finds desire firing at everything without completion, consuming attention and generative energy that had nothing to do with the original signal; in the myth Shiva had to burn Kama when desire threatened cosmic order The Shaivite counter was tapas, directed austerity, not suppression but controlled redirection: the same intensity that was scattering as compulsion is gathered and applied to a chosen aim. The pattern requires diffusion; convergence is the interrupt Redirect the energy into one concrete output right now — write a paragraph, solve a problem, build something physical. The same watts the pattern is scattering can be converged onto a real task. The convergence is not suppression; it is the same energy going somewhere chosen.
Succubus / Incubus (universal medieval, the night-entry pattern) Sexual intrusion through the sleep-state threshold; exploits the same reduced electromagnetic filtering as the other night-entry patterns in this catalog; the host experiences vivid arousal that arrives from outside rather than being generated by genuine desire; over time produces a specific exhaustion and a detachment from waking relationships that begins to feel normal The same counter applies as for the Mare and Ruach Ra’ah: a deliberate pre-sleep statement of identity and intention that places the waking self as a prior claim before the threshold comes down. Any practice that marks the sleep boundary deliberately closes the entry point the pattern uses Before sleep, state your name and one clear intention for the following day. The stated intention places the waking self as a prior claim on the threshold. The specificity of the intention is what closes the entry point, not the content of the intention but the act of deliberate forward-placement.

Substance, Addiction & Spirit-Entry Scripts

Pattern Version Characteristics Best Way to Drain It Generative Interrupt
Al-Kuhul (Arabic, the extracted spirit) The substance reduces the brain’s electromagnetic filtering without the host’s conscious consent; the host experiences this as relaxation, inspiration, or courage, because those filters were also keeping out their own suppressed material; what feels like freedom is reduced resistance to everything simultaneously, including what was being kept out for good reason The traditions that understood this best prescribed deliberate threshold rituals before consuming anything that alters the filtering mechanism, a stated intention that names what you are and are not open to receiving. Not as superstition but as a prior claim that gives the nervous system a reference point when the filters come down Before the substance is taken, write or state aloud what you are open to and what you are not open to during this session. The stated prior claim gives the nervous system a reference point to return to when the filter comes down. Without it, the threshold is unclaimed.
Bacchus-gift (Roman, the god who gave wine knowing its cost) Distinct from the mob-ecstasy pattern; this is the substance-specific script, the promise that the self can be shed and something better will be there instead; the host keeps returning because the shed-self feeling was real even though what replaced it was the pattern, not freedom; over time the self that returns is smaller each time The Roman priests of Bacchus distinguished between sacred use, where the dissolution was temporary, intentional, and contained by ritual, and profane use, where the dissolution had no container and the pattern filled whatever was available. The counter is the container: a defined beginning, a defined end, a defined purpose, known before the substance is taken Write three things before the threshold comes down: when this begins, when this ends, and what specific purpose it serves. All three must exist in writing before the substance is taken. The container must be built before the threshold opens, not after.
Lilitu (Babylonian, the wind spirit of intoxication) One of the earliest documented atmospheric entities specifically associated with the altered state; operates through breath and the lowered threshold; the host experiences the contact as creativity, inspiration, or uncanny insight because those are real experiences the pattern can produce using the host’s own neural machinery; the output is real, the source is not what it appears The Babylonian protective texts prescribed closing the physical openings before sleep and before any altered state, specifically the mouth, nose, and ears, through vocalization, breath practices, and sound. The mechanism described is accurate: the pattern enters through the channels that are opened; closing them deliberately before opening them for other purposes is boundary-setting at the physiological level State your identity and your intention aloud before any altered state, including intense creative work or near-sleep. The vocalization closes the breath-entry point the Babylonian texts identified. The statement does not need to be long — name and intention is sufficient to place a prior claim.
