As far as I remeber from books and classes, Stalin and Hitler were well aware of the fact, that the pact was just a pause for the war between them, the CCCP and Germany. Hitler didnt have the Power to start a war with Russia and france simultaneously;l and Stalin needed more time to build up his army. And both knew that about the other. That was part of the reason, Nazi Germany attacked Russia as early as possible. Otherwise the Nazis didnt see a chance to beat them at all …

Was he surprised though? I always understood that they (Hitler & Stalin) knew that eventually they would clash, they just didn’t know when and who would attack first
