Das Maus-Team beobachtet, wie und wo Uhus in Deutschland leben – zum Beispiel im Sauerland oder im Siebengebirge. Dort paaren sie sich in einem Steinbruch, suchen Nahrung, brüten und bekommen ihren Nachwuchs. Auch in einer alten Burgruine in der Nähe von Aachen lassen sich Uhus entdecken: Dank ferngesteuerter Kameras in der Burgruine kann Eulenschützer Stefan verfolgen, wie ein Uhu-Weibchen vier Küken aufzieht. Nach nur wenigen Monaten sind aus ihnen junge Uhus geworden, die das Beutegreifen trainieren und sogar schon fliegen können!

This is an educational video from the German TV station ARD1, about German owls. It’s in German, of course, but it’s got some great video about two breeding pairs and their owlets, briefly covering from egg to leaving the nest, including some adorable footage of one of the fledglings practicing pouncing on a dead bird.

One couple nests in a cliff face; the other in a castle ruins. I fancy it’s a nice watch even if you don’t speak German.

Uhu is the German word for Bubo bubo, a Eurasian species of Eagle Owl. Eule is the German word for owls in general: Uhu are Eule, but not all Eule are Uhu.

    That German word always brings a smile on my face, the Latin is a close second.

    Btw Uhu is what we called white putty at my school because of the brand (we switched to cheaper Pritt long ago but it has stuck)

      Have you seen that funny language video comparing words in different languages? “Farfalla… butterfly… papillon… schmetterling!”? It’s funny, but German has a bunch of cutsey words, like “Uhu,” too. I like how “Uhu” is onomatopoeic.

        I’ve seen the whole series and I hate French. Krankenwagen is so much better than “aamboulaans”. It’s a Wagen for den Kranken!

      They are indeed Tristan and Isolde. And the second pair is Lotte and Leo. They are also observed via camera by EGE but they are in a location that has a huge population of raccoons. In other years that hindered them to successfully raise chicks.

        I tried to tag you in this morning, as I always appreciate your updates on them, but I couldn’t get it to work.

        It was a nice change to see the cameras and some other angles of the building they live in.

        Look at that baby’s foot! 😄

        I was feeding the baby GHO this morning and the one that has been really dominant surprised me. I was asked to look for pellets, I’m assuming for the kids’ summer camp, and while I was examining one, I set the tray of food right next to me.

        Boss baby didn’t want to wait, and lands on the whole pile of food right beside me and starts munching down. My face feels uncomfortably close to this angry ball if sharp bits, and I’m not in a position to gracefully move. I’m looking at its talons and remembering how this “little” one tried to bite at me before.

        It eventually wandered away a bit with an awkward hop as it tried jumping with the chick in its talons and I got up.

        It did come back and pounce on the food again and I got some good looks at it while feeling a little more secure. I didn’t have my leather gloves, as I was just expecting to place the food and leave, not to have an up close encounter with the big one.

        The more passive step-siblings were hiding in the back, huffing to stay cool and waiting for me to get out.

        I think these 3 should all do very well, but that big one has no fear. She is going to dominate whatever forest she gets released into! Such an amazing owl…

          Those feet are always (to me) shockingly enormous. Especially in the video, where the chicks are so young that he can casually sit next to them and just reach over and grab them, and put them in his lap!

            I understand a bit from a human perspective why they don’t fight back, but it makes me wonder how they understand it. 🤔

            After all the fight I will get from a cornered squirrel that acts like a feral cat, that the raptors can be so calm in the same situation seems strange. I don’t know if they have an understanding of how brittle they are against something our size, if they’re just confused because they are supposed to be the top of the food chain that something else has come along and grabbed them and they haven’t mentally prepared for it, or if we are just so big and scary they are half expecting for things to be over quickly.
