i had brought it up w/ regards to Disclosure Day in how hokey it felt and how the two of them— in my opinion— were on equal hokey-ground.

It’s like seeing someone with main character syndrome in their own little fantasy land.

—I mean, I know stories have main characters and this is one, but like… so over the top this is with everyone’s indulgence.

Why is Richard Dreyfus handing out towels? Why the Italian accent? Why is John Goodman dancing so nutty? Is Holly Hunter the most beautiful woman in the world in this movie (not saying she isn’t pretty, but it’s so over the top as everyone’s tripping over themselves to dance with her)?

        It genuinely makes me cringe.

I don’t think context helps; he’s the best firefighter pilot in the crew and they’re not married, he just agreed to retire/train pilots instead of put out fires himself.

And that guy she makes eyes with does swoop in to marry her after Dreyfus dies.

I think this is just meant to be a small town community with 2 big characters everyone else revolves their lives around, but uhhh, those have never been my kind of story; especially in older movies where everyone who isn’t a main character is overweight, old, and/or BIPOC.

I was hoping it was the director’s attempt at showing the internal joy and love that Richard Dreyfuss’s character feels towards Dorinda, but… I think it was just a scene from an '80s movie. They were all that kind of cocaine-fueled weirdness back then.
