Was on the fence as well but I just snagged a eBay refurbished gen 1 for $480 before taxes by using a coupon that gave me $120 off. Comes with a year of eBay warranty as well so check it out if the deals still active
I bought this green one from Best Buy and an ultra 2 from Amazon for $740. Sounds like keeping the ultra for $650 is worth it. I don’t plan on upgrading for years and years so that’s the only thing making me want to keep the ultra 2.

Best deal I saw for an Ultra was on eBay, but they’re refurbs… still, from a company that sells a lot of them, and they’re guaranteed to have at least 85% battery. Can also always return if it’s not what you expected.
For $485, fyi. I found it on slickdeals, if you need to find the specific link (you need to use a coupon code iirc) most folks there seem to think it’s a good deal.
Follow up question: is buying a gen-1 Ultra a bad idea with the 2 out?

Gen 1 Ultra is perfectly fine. The updates on the 2 are incremental.
