In a functional country, it’s not that bad of a quote. By giving to the majority it will also come back to you as the individual in a functional society. America isn’t really functioning super well, so it feels wrong in that context.

It works pretty well in my country where you give a lot to your country and in return you and your fellow man has access to free education and free Healthcare. Which is pretty neat and how it should be everywhere.

I just remember watching him as a kid and he never really struck me as a particularly intelligent man but I suppose that was all part of the scheme to get this charming actor everyman into office to pull of a bunch of evil bullshit, much like today except with a different much much much much less charming actor

Thats the thing, he was an actor. He performed the role of the noble politician.

But the real reagan was in his early career. He was president of SAG, which is a union, and then went union busting as a politician. He informed to the FBI and the house un american committee about his fellow actors as to who might be communist during the red scare. Theres so much more, but then this would be a wall of text.

The charming idiot of his late presidency was partly act, partly and increasingly the dementia.

No disagreement, but i don’t think this image is trying to rehabilitate his image in any way. That quote is undisputably one of his most famous, much like how Nixon’s most famous quote is “I am not a crook!”. Both bad people.

I also don’t think that quote in particular is what will end up being the one Trump will be most known for. He has said a lot of dumb shit and a lot of reprehensible shit over the years. Time will be the judge of what his lasting legacy will be, but as long as I’m around I’ll be reminding everyone of what an awful piece of shit Trump has always been.

Reagan was an evil, slimy piece of shit that should have accidentally strangled himself in the womb, but he was smart enough to permanently set the country up to consume itself over the course of a few decades. Also whether you like him or not, it was a great quote. The only thing this meme is pointing out is that all the previous evil bastards could at least have a cool, lasting quote, while the current one can’t even do that

He’d already torn down the wall by that point, the fact Inproper Grammer is a quote of his is not surprising though. Tho I’m fairly sure I’m hearing teared in the recording.

What are you on about? His speech was two years before the wall was torn down. At any rate, making the statement that ‘Gorbachov tore down the wall’ doesn’t make any sense.

FDR was a moderate, organized labor forced him to make concessions to the working class. FDR got credit for 40 years of labor organizing. Everybody knows about the new deal in 1935, nobody knows about the 1934 nationwide strike wave.

Granted, was he terrible? In some ways yes. Japanese internment was a particularly egregious example. Tbf, Abraham Lincoln was also a moderate re: slavery until historic conditions forced the issue of emancipation. A bad president would have held the line against objective historical conditions and deepened the crisis. This is what Trump does. FDR wasn’t a bad president like Trump, but IMO he was more like a guy who did the minimum when wealth inequality and crisis was not just the worst, but when the organized workers demanded change and were able to fairly quickly take over whole cities and industries in order to force our demands.

FDR also inadvertently created the concept of tying healthcare to employment. He wouldn’t let employers offer higher pay during the labor crunch in the war to avoid fears of inflation. Employers then got creative by offering benefits like healthcare and the rest is history. Despite the bad shit he was till arguably one of the best presidents in the country because we can’t have morally uncompromised leaders apparently.

Yeah I’m fine with treating him with an even hand. I’m not sure how useful it is to just paint every president with the same black mark. Pre ww2 was pre USA core imperialism, the rules were a little different. We got the new deal, Germany got Hitler. Understanding why the ascent of the international working class after ww1 led to the defeat of the international working class after ww2, and how the project played out differently in different places at like exactly the same time is the real practical insight afforded by class-based historical analysis IMO. And practical understanding requires understanding the actual history, not just some leftist caricature of it.

I think the model for this is like Black Reconstruction in America by W.E.B DuBois. Just straght, unvarnished facts about every aspect of the period, particularly how national and international causes affected individuals on the basis of class antagonisms (and vice versa.) Gramsci talks about Piedmont Savoy empire understanding their historic role in the risorgimento, contrasted with the more progressive Action Party, and how that developed the next 100 years of Italian politics. And how knowing our “historic role” requires knowing the real opportunities and limitations afforded by history, and not what we think they “should be” as historic subjects.

Since USAmerican big ag companies couldn’t compete with Japanese farming, FDR put 120k Japanese people in internment camps, 22k were agricultural workers which made up the vast majority of Japanese farmers and farm laborers. The war was used as an excuse for internment, and USA big ag companies were able to buy these farms for as low as $23 per acre.

There was a war, there was a crime, FDR was responsible = war criminal

The country that won the war against nazi Germany was the URSS, not the USA. On the other hand, the USA dropped two atomic bombs over japan, something that even the nazis didnt do (would they? I would bet on yes, but they didn’t)

Movies almost never are credible sources about any subject. But even taking that aside, its a movie produced by the same country that made the bomb. As someone else said, not only burguerlanders will kill you in a war, they will come back 20 years later to tell you how that made their soldiers sad

USSR STARTED WW2 together with the nazis, they were spoonfed help just to survive after they switched sides because the nazis betrayed and attacked them.

Stalin even said nazism was okay, just another way of thinking.
