Yeah, I think modern audiences associate ancient Greece too strongly with the Corinthian helmets. It’s like how using American accents instead of old British stage accents for the bronze age Greeks feels wrong to many even though we’re simply imposing a different anachronistic modern parlance onto them - and the bards who original told the story were already doing the same with their newer post-dark-ages form of the language.

In general, the way vikings are portrayed in media is more fantasy than fact.
It’s like everyone thinks vikings only wore leather and furs and caked their faces in dirt, when in reality, vikings were pretty colorful, clean and fabulous.

But they are depicted as big, strong,
aryanwhite men, so that‘s ok.not always. I remember they cast Caroline Henderson (pretty cool scandinavian singer) to play the role of a historical norwegian viking jarl in the show Vikings, which was a very strange choice. And tbf, that show is especially guilty of depicting the fantasy version of vikings with furs and leather and modern hair cuts and dirt on their faces. I don’t have much respect for that show.
I think Vinland Saga does a much better job with historical accuracy when it comes to depictions of clothes, ships, houses and tools.
I mean, even in historical fantasy, I’d still love to see things done correctly. It would ruin my emersion so much if you did a movie about something, say for example the French Revolution, and everyone just pulls out a bolt action Springfield to shoot the monarchs.

I actually laughed out loud at that.
Yeah I was expecting the plan to fail since obviously that isn’t what actually happened, and it was a legit shock.
After the shock and laughter, I’d be a little annoyed, funny as it sounds.
People who think that something being fiction means there are no rules and anything goes are the most annoying people to discuss with.
It particularly amazes me in the Hollywood movies that cost hundreds of millions of dollars and they can’t bother to get basic facts or their own plot points straight.
I feel like the Cinema-Sins-ification of online film criticism has raised generations who cannot appreciate anything on a level beyond a checklist of “ackshually” gotchas. At least the crowd who just don’t want to see black actors had an emotional response.
No problem with black actors. But why not new stories. I’m sure Africa has Ron’s of stories most people haven’t heard. No we get the same European stories and they race swap people for inclusion. It is the most low effort bullshit.
And then the race doesn’t matter people are bullshit. If it doesn’t matter it doesn’t matter bit I haven’t seen another way. Never seen a white of black Mulan. Or a white or Asian Rosa Parks. And before she was real they changed the race of that Queen of England so being real isn’t a factor.
I recently heard about an effort to grab some of the verbal stories from Africa and write them down, and that seems like a perfect treasure trove.
It’s because there’s an assumption that only European history and culture is interesting to audiences so they just ignore other cultures and do their weird inaccurate costumes and castings and call anyone who has criticism for it a racist or a snob.
It’s so easy to dismiss people by calling them racist when you take their culture, histories and mythogies and do nothing to represent them correctly.
And before anyone comes for me, I still find it fucking weird that Martin Scorsese decided to cast a white man in the role of Bill Smith, when the real Bill Smith was native American. It is especially weird to me, because Bill Smith is the only good white man in the movie. I just don’t understand the need to lie about his ethnicity.
I hate that movie with a passion, btw. For many, many, many reasons.
I would love a cinema sins channel thats all based on second+ level thematic inconsistencies.
Literally dozens of us would watch.
