We don’t even know where our tax money is going.
Bombing brown children and lining the pockets of the wealthy, that’s where, but you know that.
That’s where you want it to go instead of offering a better education to the children of this country, elevating people out of poverty, protecting/ enriching our environment, improving our fucking drinking water, etc.
Ya’ll really are a bunch of clowns with your disingenuous confusion and bad faith arguments. Hate and fear run your lives.
What the hell are they doing on here anyway? Shouldn’t they be somewhere more corporate?
Shouldn’t you be back in one of your stupid pinko circle jerks where your worthless opinion is wanted?
You’re on a federated, open source social network created by communists. You’re on the stupid pinko circle jerk, ding dong 😎👍
And of all the federated communities, you still strive to show how utterly worthless lemmy.world users are here, in a community you openly display you lack the mental capacity to participate in.
TJD, @[email protected] , both of you, be civil to each other. FFS, I have a life outside of babysitting toddlers.
Scolding isn’t enough.
What a racist comment. Bombing brown children.
People should elevate themselves out of poverty. It isn’t hard.
It’s so weird to see a liberal in the wild.
“It isn’t hard” is such a tone-deaf unempathetic argument.
It isn’t tone death. Many of my friend and myself have done it.
We all grew up in poverty, worked hard and did well. The difference is we don’t call People tone deaf, expect the government to do it or have a plethora of other excuses.
So no I don’t have empathy for laziness or expecting others to carry your burden. You’re an adult. Man up and create your future.
While you worked hard and did well, a great deal of luck and actual good policies in place helped you along. Then when your generation became wealthy… you did not want to pay forward your good luck and kicked the ladder so nobody else could get any semblance of a stable life.
Wages that don’t keep up with inflation, no more pensions, erosion of unions and decades of anti-labour practices, your generation practically invented the handbook to kicking your future generations to hell.
Also, you seem to have some pride that you were the one to man-up and work hard, when in reality people today work more than you did in an entire year. Both parents work nowadays, and the ratio of the cost of housing to that of wages is greater in our generation.
It is YOU who had it easy. Yet you think you’re so great for making a life for yourselves. Let me give you some advice: Go look up the starting wages of a decent job for fresh graduates today (oh i forgot to mention college tuition was easier for you) and simultaneously look for a house in the area where you might find such a job.
I bet you will start pissing in your underwear when you realize why the current generation has all but given up on the American dream: it’s dead.
YES, I am reversing the meme: You boomers have no idea how it is like to face a recession, come out of it and face stagnant wages, while also seeing the price of college tuition skyrocket 700-800% meanwhile getting the ladder kicked out from the top by smug asshole boomers like you who then turn around and brag about how hard it was for a single member of the family could work entry level job and save up for a house in 3 years with a paid off car. Y’all had it handed to you on a silver platter: affordable housing, great economy, and no war to speak of. (Cold war is such a child’s excuase. You guys were afraid of socialism for crying out loud).
If you want laziness… how about boomers who bought up all housing when it was affordable and jacking up the prices on millenials? How about the shit thats the Iraq war and bullshit like cutting funding to social security.
Bitchass weak boomer who has dementia and forgot how easy they had it.
wtf are you going on about? I’m not a boomer.
I’m pretty sure the person you replied to was referencing Palestinians being bombed, particularly hospitals. Were you being bombed growing up? Because people being bombed have a significantly harder time “elevating themselves out of poverty.”
It’s racist to call them brown people. Under United States law they’re white people. Just like myself.
Maybe if they stopped being terrorist, they could elevate themselves.
Implying everyone in palestine is a terrorist. Also, what ramification is there when you can call anybody terrorist?
They elected Hamas as their government. They cheered as bodies were dragged down the street on the day of the attack.
You think that’s civil behavior?
No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, you’d think keeping the government accountable of their spending would be a generally agreed upon thing?
Yes you’d think. but it seems most in here aren’t much concerned.
The government should be accountable for its spending.
People often misunderstand the problem with the Pentagon and accounting. A good example is around 9/11 an audit failed and people thought the money was ‘missing’ That 9/11 was to hide the missing money.
That is rubbish. The issue is they just can’t properly account for it in all the systems. Nothing was ‘missing’. they just couldn’t get it to all line up to do crappy information systems and processes.
System A didn’t talk to system B and things had to be moved over by hand, etc. Things were not properly coded, etc.
I fully support our military spending but the accounting for all of it is horrible.
I also hate government accounting. It confuses the average person. They see a coffee cup for 1200 and think the coffee cup cost 1200. Instead of realizing it was assigned a value based on the total project cost. That shouldn’t be allowed either. Every item should be accounted for against it’s true cost.
I mostly agree with you but it’s still kind of ridiculous that their accounting is so shit.
It is incredibly ridiculous. The one thing the government should be able to do is account for the money we gave them.
I find it ridiculous that the government wants to put regulations on corporations that they can’t even follow.
Here is an interesting example of the conservative paradox. Dwight D. Eisenhower ® warned us about the military industrial complex. So the ideas of small government and fiscal responsibility are the exact principles that ought to guard against what is happening with the Pentagon. At the same time tho, the cold war was taking up so much of America’s resources to battle communism literally everywhere, it was kind of inevitable that an enormous -and enormously complex-bureaucratic machine would develop with many many opportunities to quietly siphon off defense money with no one noticing.
These two things don’t work well together: we want lower taxes and responsible balanced budgets and avoid bureaucratic bloat, but also, we have to give everything we got to keep the commies from destroying everything that we love. We have to keep ahead of the Russian military, the KGB, and stop the domino effect happening all over the world.
Except now that the cold war was won and we know that Russia’s military is not all that, can we shut off any part of the cold war machine? We still have the Red Chinese to think about and that’s no small threat, but for those that want less taxes and sensible budgets, does defence have to be such an astonishingly fat calf that parasites can attach themselves without concern, and suck the life blood out of… -I feel like I am going too far with this analogy.
Just… it seems like whenever I bring up Eisenhower people are like “meh” but mention Reagan who blew up the deficit beyond all debt in the history of the nation and people are full of love for old Ron. What’s up with that?
I’d fucking gladly cut the cold war “world police” bs. But apparently not wanting to dump billions into every random conflict in fuck all backwater nowhere makes me a “Russian troll” or whatever these days.
We still have the Red Chinese to think about and that’s no small threat
Lmao. Lol, even. We could sit on our asses for at least a couple decades without China even being able to touch our capabilities. Even the bare minimum of keeping up with the times makes China a total non-threat.
China is more of a threat than you realize. They may not be able to occupy us but they can launch missiles at us.
War has changed.
The military is only 3% of our gdp. People act like it’s half out budget. It isn’t.
First, GDP is a dumb metric to use and doesn’t actually matter when talking about government spending.
And second, for 2015, the US government chose to spend 54% of our discretionary budget on the military. It’s 16% of our overall 2015 budget (which includes discretionary and mandatory spending), but social security, Medicare, and Medicaid (all part of mandatory spending) essentially run on auto pilot as far as spending goes (because it’s determined by how many people are eligible to receive the benefits).
So when Congress is determining where to send government money, they’re choosing to allot 54% of the budget they’re able to change to the military.
So the two total budget for the US in 2022 was 6.12 trillion. And the budget for the DOD was about 800 billion. So almost sixth of the budget was spent on the DOD. And that’s just the budget, things like wars don’t count against it so we likely spend way more than that on the military
“almost a sixth”. Lmao
In what way is representing a fact laughing your ass off?
My point being that US tax dollars were spent to destabilize central and south american nations, causing an influx of illegal immigration and asylum seekers, which people are furious about. They don’t want one dollar of tax money to house or feed people desperate for a better future for their families, which ok, Americans have their individual priorities and opinions and thats valid I guess.
But meanwhile the Pentagon is buying $1200 coffee cups, $600 toilet seats, the list goes on and on, check my facts here- the DoD bought a goddamn gas station in Afghanistan for 4 million dollars and people are like “oh well what are you going to do?”
Coffee cups don’t really cost 1200 dollars.
If you’re curious, look how government accounting works. It’s actually pretty interesting as it hides the cost of things.
What I’m curious about is how people can be concerned about out of control welfare spending and constantly complaining about taxes while the DoD is bleeding money like a Russian princess, and nobody seems to mind.
Edit: well there you have it folks: ask a straight question, no actual answer. The military can piss money into the ocean for all anyone cares, but fuck Americans in need of assistance. They want to spend 5 million to build a new golf course at Andrews AFB (which already has 2) and it’s yawns all around but the minute a trans person wants to take a leak in peace it’s call the papers and wake the neighbors.
I’m not even making the argument “well how can you spend money on bombs when Americans are going hungry”. I’m asking why doesn’t anybody care about this particular waste. It’s because nobody cares about this. I suspect the real answer is that as long as black and brown people don’t benefit, gubment waste is perfectly fine. God bless America.
Welfare is literally over half of our federal spending. Yeah, I wonder why that would recieve more attention than other topics
Entitlements and welfare are the majority of our budget and for the most part don’t provide much value for their cost.
Military spending is required by the constitution.
Welfare spending is a waste of money and is not required by law.
I get a benefit from the military spending and zero benefit for the welfare spending.
Don’t worry, republican congressmen will champion the effort to raise the Pentagon’s budget sooner or later.
Save this post and come back to it when it becomes fact. Because we all know it will.
Why would I need to save it when there is already pre-existing history?

Pick any year within the last two decades and you can pretty easily find an article about republicans pushing for or having a high military budget. That trend is not changing any time soon.
I was referring to the next instance. I get your point.
I know, I was just trying to hammer home my point. Sorry if it came across as aggressive.
Only one way to fix this… Give them another billion.
And we never will.
