The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) defines binge drinking as having many drinks on one occasion: “five or more drinks for a male, or four or more drinks for a female.”
It is distinguished from alcoholism in that binge drinkers have not developed a physical or psychological dependence on alcohol.
The Letterkenny cast of characters are binge drinkers. No one on the show is ever depicted as having their alcohol consumption interfere with their jobs or personal lives. Wayne and Darry never miss out on chorin’ because they’re hungover or drunk, for instance. Hell, even the skids, whose whole thing is being meth’d out degenerates, are never actually depicted as being addicts, just twitchy weirdos.
You can absolutely be an alcoholic and not have it interfere with your job or personal life. That’s easily half the people in my AA meetings and how a lot of people get there.
I have zero desire to argue or discount your own experiences with addiction, but in my own experience with NA and AA, both supporting my late wife and by myself, a generous portion of AA meeting attendees are court ordered DUI offenders who wouldn’t meet anyone’s qualifications of addicted and binge drinkers proactively stepping down their drinking before it becomes an addiction, with maybe 20-30% holding onto chips with more than a week or two on them.
Appreciate that and ditto, but people shouldn’t hand-wave away DUIs. There is never a need to drink, getting in legal trouble for drinking is by definition problem drinking.
I think, if I’ve read him right, he’s not hand waving a dui he’s pointing out that a binge drinker would’ve not gotten the dui in the first place because they have a handle on their heavy consumption, where as, an alcoholic does not and would not taper off their consumption leading to the dui?
Tastes like gold
I think they didn’t describe it 100%.
As we know an alcoholic needs the booze to function, the effect can be invisible if they take steps to conceal it, so in a way that is affecting their life or job by all the extra steps needed to accomodare the habit.
No. Some cultures rely on alcohol more than others though. And different eras.
