My friend’s on reddit a lot, uses it for support questions and reviews mostly, but got fed up with all the bullshit toxicity.
I suggested she check out Lemmy, there’s less content, but generally fewer toxic interactions, and we scrolled a bit.
She checked it out, didn’t understand a meme on WomensStuff, had me ask them about it, and was so put off by their responses that that was the end of lemmy for her.
Nope. I think the biggest problem is the lack of users.
Cool, that’s really good to hear. I keep seeing mod abuse posts, and of course meeting the odd shitty users, and then I rolled the wrong com on the wrong day, but hey, when it rains it pours.
I certainly prefer it here than on Reddit.
Agreed,Lemmy is much better by design and there are far fewer bots here then on reddit and you can actually do something about them.
Interaction here was a great remedy to the soul-sucking drain i felt logged into reddit.
The friend I mentioned in the post showed me some of her product support questions she asked on Reddit and the threads were so distasteful. I don’t feel the draw at all of interacting there anymore, but while I was in that environment, I didn’t realize how depersonalizing and bland it was.
I tell everyone how awesome it is, theyre all terrified its the darkweb and won’t leave corpo net. me and 1 other person IRL are the only people I actually know that are on the fediverse.

Haha, I got the same reaction feom my friend for a long time, “dark web” specifically! That’s why she hadn’t tried lemmy until the other day despite my recommendations.
I had to show her that it’s just a normal website, type in the address there you are. Even has apps and everything.
Part of it is the “scary virus” URL.

No, my friends are all assholes so don’t care about toxicity. The problem for them is lack of content.

I think it’s actually content. Most of them follow in-depth subs like AskHistorians and stuff like that, where there just isn’t an equivalent here.
Lemmy askhistorians has thousands of posts, right? i feel like I see them all the time.

There’s just a scale to reddit still that the fediverse doesn’t come close to touching. Hopefully that changes, but it’s not even close right now.
Different scales for sure. I like the small scale of lemmy though, I’m happy with the gradual build. Definitely more lively than it was when I first checked it out a few years ago.
Same, I’m happy here. But many of my friends are not.
People are mostly lazy idiots that want to be fed algorithmic slop, and dont want to curate their own algorithm free experience.
Hence why we have gestures broadly this type of world.
I dunno it sounds like this friend doesn’t use reddit beyond what comes up in a google search.
If they’re comfortable with reddit, but find lemmy to be offputting then I don’t know what to say except ‘Maybe it is for the best.’
She’ll get pretty into some reddit threads, but I think it’s difficult for anyone to see how toxic Reddit is while they’re inside it.
The comments on womensstuff here were just super aggressive and weird, and it only takes one bad first impression.
It was definitely an atypical lemmy experience for me, but I’ve been here a while, so statistically I had to eventually to stumble upon a group of lemmy bigots. And Murphy’s law, of course, while I’m explaining how tolerant lemmy is by comparison.
