This is @DingoInThere@lemmy.today

The user created an account 19 days ago and has made 1,179 downvotes compared to 0 upvotes.

The user hasn’t made a single post or comment either.

Yet another example of someone targeting a very small handful of users. Looks like the posts being downvoted are random comments and nothing controversial, but they are all downvoted by this user.

It seems very targeted, almost like he’s fixated on a small group of users and is trying to bully them into no longer enjoying Lemmy.

Of course, this would never stop me, since I’m not afraid of bullies. But it may turn other people off and less inclined to being a part of the fediverse.

Not very nice behavior. Hmm, I wonder what they are so angry about?

Yes, yes, this Court does find that the downvoter appears to be very angry.

But this is Lemmy. None of this is real. Why is that person so angry?

Well, the Court has decided to help. By the authority invested in this honorable Court, presided over by the deeply dishonorable me, I hereby find the defendant:

    GUILTY!!

The evidence is overwhelming, mostly because I have decided that it is.

Now, since the defendant appears to be an unusually angry person, and because I’m feeling especially charitable today after my downstairs neighbor finally took my suggestion and played several albums of the always magnificent Debbie Gibson, this Court has devised a sentence intended to restore peace to the defendant’s troubled soul.

The defendant is hereby sentenced to 1,379 consecutive days of watching episodes of The Wiggles.

No skipping. No muting. No pretending to fall asleep.

If a song begins, the defendant must remain present until the final note has been legally completed. The Court believes this will almost certainly improve the defendant’s mood.

And if it does not, it will at least improve mine, because the thought of the defendant spending those days trapped in a brightly colored room listening to people in odd clothes sing about fruit salad has already brought me tremendous inner peace.

    Sentence begins immediately.

May the Wiggles have mercy upon you, for this Court will not.

    This is now Lemmy Law.

As far as I can tell, that only really affects Hexbear users though.

Someone on another federated instance can still see the post from their own instance, downvote it, and potentially see those downvotes there. Hexbear users just don’t have the downvote feature on their own instance.

So, for example, you post something about four-leaf clovers. From Hexbear, you see the upvotes and think, “Cool, I brightened some people’s day.” But someone viewing that same federated post from another instance might see 125 downvotes. They may decide not to read it because of that score, or even add another downvote.

Basically, disabling downvotes on an instance doesn’t necessarily eliminate downvotes across the whole Threadiverse. It mainly changes how voting works and appears for users on that particular instance.

That’s been my experience, anyway. I have an alt account on an instance with downvotes disabled. When I’m logged in there, I can’t see or use downvotes. But when I view the same federated content from my account on another instance, I can see downvotes and even cast them.

That is a silly take, the whole reason they got disabled on hexbear was because transphobic assholes were mass downvoting anything by or related to trans people.

Internet points are “fake” but downvotes can be used as an insidious form of harassment.

How dare you! How dare you! Damn you to all of Hell for saying such a thing. I have cried many tears because of downvotes. Or it could because of the asbestos in my ceiling, but either way, it’s horrible!

Why, just last night I was crying into my beautiful anime body-waifu-pillow adult girlfriend about some downvotes I had gotten.

I looked deep into her enormous dark eyes, now stained with my tears, and prepared to cry some more. But then she stirred certain feelings within me. Powerful feelings.

So I professed my love for her.

Hard love. Very, very hard love.

Twenty-six seconds later, after I had finished loving her with the full emotional commitment expected of a man and his polyester beloved, I leaned back and reached for a cigarette.

I was discouraged to find that I didn’t have any. Because I don’t smoke.

I never took up smoking because my Uncle Jeremiah had Black Lung from working in the mines. He’d come home, cough enormous gray globs into his handkerchief, smile that big goofy grin with his 3 teeth gleaming, hand it to me, and tell me to rinse it out in the sink.

Then he’d light his pipe. Cough up another one. Wink at me. And hand me the handkerchief again.

Now I’m telling you, fellow, that’s the sort of childhood experience that will turn a man against tobacco. And against working in the mines.

And there is only one thing in this world that has ever filled me with the same stomach-churning disgust as watching those gray, ropey Uncle Jeremiah lung treasures slowly dissolve beneath the kitchen faucet:

      Seeing that I’ve been downvoted!

So yes, I WILL stand up for the innocent victims of this terrible crime.

I will stand beside them. I will speak for them. I will defend their dignity, and their Lemmy God-given right to post stupid things on Lemmy without consequences.

And I shall continue doing so every single day… until I get bored.

So you sit back there with your smug little face and tell me one more time that downvotes mean nothing. Go ahead.

      This Court is listening.
