[…] tips don’t count as part of a restaurant’s revenues, but higher menu prices do. So if a venue increases prices to pay staff more, its revenues go up accordingly, and it must pay more sales tax.

So conversely, legal tax evasion allows a business to undercut the competition? Who would have thought.

The problem that lots of folks don’t want to discuss is the servers. Good servers make more money from tips than they would a uniformly higher wage, so they go work places with tips. Places that have implemented no tips and higher wage, have worse service as a result, and tend to struggle.

From a business’s standpoint, they probably have to offer a much higher base wage to retain good servers

but some eateries think that they are unfair.

Yes, they are unfair! Personnel could pocket them! Imagine the audacity of those pesky thieves?! They were bestowed a great honour to make money for their glorious master and they STEAL! Outrageous! When will those little shits get enough?! They are so stupid that they don’t even understand that they don’t deserve any money! Pfah!

Tips are a good idea on paper but in practice they are unfair, to workers as well as patrons. Don’t defend tipping, don’t attack companies that try to buck the trend. Getting rid of tipping is a great thing that the US as a whole should move towards. It will involve paying servers a fair wage, and that’s okay.
