It really did seem like Trump would be the “end US empire” candidate back when he got elected but I don’t think anyone could’ve guessed how thoroughly he’d do it.

Not like the empire wasn’t already sunsetting, but, you know, just never rotating your naval deployments and using chatgpt to strategize is a lot of acceleration to say the least.

Credit to Iran for preparing for something like this since the 70’s too, obviously.

Someone during the 2020 primaries said something to the effect of “Bernie is the only one who can draw down the empire gracefully” and I think that was spot on. Trump is blowing it up trying to do too much at once without a coherent plan, Biden was keeping things as they were and letting it slowly die (hillary and kamala likely would have done the same).

In my day we young naive radlibs thought Obama might do that (draw down the empire) and look what happened.

If Bernie was elected in 2020 nothing would have changed with Israel’s genocide. We would likely be in an identical situation in regards to “the empire” as Biden, there was very little foreign policy differences. Maybe he would have dropped the embargo on Cuba (MAYBE) but then Trump would win and do what he did anyway, and the CIA would use it as an excuse to do a bunch of infiltration and get a bunch of assets in the country like Obama.

In retrospect Bernie definitely did NOT have the sauce to push back the blob. You always want sauce against the blob.

Bernie might drop the stupid Abraham Accords (50% likely), so that would at least delay the current mess in the Middle East for another 4-8 years.

The trillions they already extract are just for the regular churn, like Hegseth’s lobster dinners or train loads of battle vehicles that get sent directly to a field to rot. Despite the Pentagon’s repeated admonition that without a galaxy-sized budget they won’t “be ready for war”, when anything happens beyond the small-scale terror attacks they regularly inflict on foreign civilians then the “piGgY bANk iS brOkEn”.

Doesn’t this historically lead to mutinies? Are we going to have a Platinum Age of Piracy with aircraft carriers?

“Runaway carrier group turns into mercenary unit” used to be my favorite cyberpunk scenario for when the US collapses, but if this war has shown us anything, it’s what a logistical nightmare it is to actually deploy a carrier for extended amounts of time.

Probably gets easier when the carrier population gets cut by ~80%. A nuclear aircraft carrier would be a nice place for a small floating city.

When Musk was doing doge, he had to be informed that the federal money was spontaneously created by congressional appropriation and didn’t depend on tax revenue. These people don’t all seem to understand that if they want more graft they can just print it, and leave the pay of the violence monopoly untouched.

In an absolute sense, yes the federal government pays for itself. However, said dollars still get tallied, divided up into the relevant sub-budgets, and the bureaucracy of additional allocations have to be gone through in order to add in more funds. So if this story is correct, it means Trump is trying to avoid the usual budget allocation/funding process, either as a hope he can speed run a “victory” over Iran, is trying to avoid congressional scrutiny into this war, or a combination of both.
