I am a Gen Z university student. The ChatGPT got boom when I was in 12th grade and I have been using ChatGPT, Gemini and Deepseek since then. I am starting to notice that now I cannot do searching anymore. I literally cannot do anything on my own like coding, learning something, fact checking, doing my assignments. I even become so reliant on it that I sometime even ask it what food should I eat, what exercises I should do. Sometimes, I “talk” with ChatGPT more than real human beings, maybe cuz I somehow end up having a bad experience or not so fulfilling experience with people. I have to use AI again and again for the same question, e.g., I asked a question today, I got the answer. If I encountered that question later again, I would not know the answer and have to go to AI for solution. What to do now? How to get out of this dependence on AI?
There’s good research out there about how adding friction to the learning process can paradoxically help out here.
Next time you ask a question you expect you will need to ask again, consider writing up a document containing that information. Avoid copy and pasting the answer, actually type out or even hand write the information for yourself, in your own words. For code snippets and such this might not be practical, but even a few lines can be very helpful.
Don’t panic about feeling isolated from interactions with regular people. These feelings can be a pretty normal part of life, especially at university. Even if they are related to something more personal about you, AI is not at the heart of them.
Use it less. The rest will fall into place eventually.
The nonsense will stop eventually when our economy crashes. AI is nothing but nonsense. It has yet to turn a profit but the epstain class is shrinking the economy. There is absolutely no need to feel dependant on AI. You are not. AI is nothing but theft, web scraping and a inefficient turd sandwich of a search engine that can undress children, make ghastly photos horrid images and get dumb apes to kill themselves. It is not enough in the arena of winning wars and one more reminder… it has yet to turn a profit. Just one stinky doo doo mess baby diaper of a turd sandwich. Don’t internalize the rot.
