Paris erupted in tense clashes as hundreds of protesters took to the streets against a controversial French bill that would provide greater legal protection to police officers when using firearms. Demonstrators called the legislation a “licence to kill”, while police fired tear gas and moved to disperse crowds amid confrontations. The protests were not limited to the French capital, with demonstrations and clashes reported in several cities. In Rennes, around 2,000 people reportedly rallied, while arrests and injuries were also reported. In Nantes, police used tear gas and dispersion grenades after projectiles were thrown. The bill was approved by France’s National Assembly at first reading in July and has since moved to the Senate.
