We’ve been warned multiple times, it’s no surprise. Won’t stop until Putin is buried and MAGAts and the tech bros pushing it are defenestrated

Could be Iran led, not Russia, I don’t think we have seen anything publicly leading one way or another?

Yeah, that’s a good point. I assumed Russia because they have the pre-existing spy / subversives network and we have been being warned for months they have plans, but the Iranians also have good cause to want to attack a joint UK/US airbase

If it were Russia they would be doing this by some foreign proxy team. Also explosives doesn’t seem Russia’s style. I am also learning towards Iran or some anti-zionist agency. Iran still makes more sense.

            They got released on bail!

I’m now thinking more towards anti war/Israel protestors doing a publicity stunt with little real harm, making it look big to cause a big media story. There hasn’t been anything from them though, would have expected something, very strange.

That’s seems more plausible now. I did also have a thought that perhaps the US is testing the UK abilities. But then why would they have fortified the gates and such.

Mmm, I’d agree that there’s a larger cultural issue with Russia, but Putain turning up his toes will make a difference, because then they have an excuse to quit a war that isn’t going well for them. Sure, give it a couple of years and who ever replaces the vampire will pull something similar, but in the mean time we get a respite and an opportunity for Europe to swivel away from US dependency and towards self sufficiency.

Yes, that’s one spin. Another is the new tyrant make seek to blame everything that is wrong with Russia on Putin - there’s plenty of historical support for that being a likely tactic (across many dictatorship changeovers).

In that event the war becomes another piece of evidence about Putin’s incompetence and how the great new leader is fixing everything by exiting it.

There’s a few ways this can go, but realistically given the massive impact it is having on the Russian economy and hence the next tyrant’s ability to siphon off assets I’m betting it goes towards stopping the war than doubling down on it

Russia has a particular centuries-long mindset where it is assumed the world is out to destroy Russia, and it may do so, but Russia is going to take as much of the world down with it as possible. It would be more acceptable then for a new leader to double down in Ukraine than to show weakness by suing for peace. One of the keys to Putin’s early popularity was his immediate and aggressive warfare against breakaway republics. A successor will face the same options.

The US is the only nation to use nuclear arms. And it used them twice.

Tell us again how Russia is uniquely evil and paranoid and always has been? You absolute racist freaks are always looking for your pathetic race-based excuses for why various nations do things instead of actually reading a god damned book that wasn’t authored by Hitler and the Nazi-lites.

And the way to deal with “terrorists” is, of course, to release them on bail. Perhaps the Keystone Kops got a bit over-excited?

Yeah the news they were released this morning was surprising.

Only two options I can come up with are a) your suggestion that the UK counter terrorism police are comically inept or b) they were just protesters with more balls than brains

My opinion is that the UK police generally are heavily leaning to the right and hence will only arrest protesters and investigate perceived terrorism if it’s coming from the left. They’re not institutionally incompetent although they are institutionally racist. Point being I don’t think comically inept is a good explanation.

I’m thinking it’s a group who were planning some sort of stupid protest (that was likely to get them shot) like hanging an anti-Iran bombing sign on the airbase wall. Particularly given the supposed explosives in the back turned out to not be

“An initial examination of the vans led police to suspect they carried explosive materials, with assessments made as to whether they were viable improvised explosive devices. After the suspects’ release it emerged that no explosive material had been found.”

Lots of chatter online that they were petrol/diesel thieves robbing local farms. The logo on their vans was “Fuel2You” and there appear to be barrels inside the vans.

Well that’s a third option I wouldn’t have thought of, but that it is very plausible. Would also make sense of how they could be initially suspected of having explosive materials before it getting discarded.

If so they were rather stupid in choosing where to try and rob - right next to a RAF base on high alert wasn’t exactly the lowest profile location in the country
