    Yeah but it was reddit so there were also 1,600 self righteous overweight basement dwellers pretending to be nobel laureates while each one tries to out edgy all the others.

      As if Lemmy doesn’t have a self-righteousness problem. I mean it’s full of former Redditors who now think they’re better than the average Redditor because they left.

          The traditional toxic redditor stereotype never struck me as particularly overweight.

          The less pleasant portions of the community have a pretty long history of hating fat people, and the last few years I was there I noticed a bit of a trend toward somewhat puritanical outlooks on indulgent food or general alcohol use. Still anecdotal, but this corroborated with my (ill-advised) decision to attend a reddit meet up. Not a lot of fat people there.

          My guess is that though many were not overweight, they didn’t have much else going for them. It was easier to insult someone being overweight than being broke or single or too online because it was the one that didn’t apply to them.
