I have been using wifi for my computer and its really not ideal so I started looking into using a wired connection.

The problem with this is that with the current router we have it only has one ethernet port that is already being used, and I found out that the ports on the modem are only for connecting to routers not individual devices. This essentially means I would have to get another router for my computer.

Now I still live with my parents for at least the next six months as I’m still in highschool so anything I do regarding this needs to be with their permission. When I tried talking to them about it one of my parents said that if I got my own router the bandwidth would be split evenly among them regardless of how much is actually being used. Because of this they said no, unless I start paying for my own internet, got my own entire modem, and my own router (not really an option for me). I think this would be reasonable if their assertion on the routers splitting the bandwidth evenly was correct which is what I wanted to get some clarity on.

I don’t really agree on it but neither of us are networking experts so hopefully we can get other opinions. From my understanding the routers would only use up the bandwidth they need, but then to restate their opinion, they believe it would essentially halve the available bandwidth on the main router (the one we have now).

We currently have a Netgear Nighthawk Cable Modem (Model CM2000) and a Google Nest router. Feel free to leave credentials if you have any as it could help me feel more certain in your answer. Not required of course anyone who is willing to help, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!
