    Good lord. This timeline sucks

Is cancer a slur? Is diabetes a slur? Also, coincidentally, being obese often results in both

Obese is a medical term. That’s it.

So was retarded once upon a time which is exactly why I think it’s dumb that we keep changing the word. Assholes will always use the currently accepted term as a slur until it isn’t accepted anymore and then the only thing that’s changed is that you now have two slurs instead of one. Don’t police the language, police the intent.

They are slurs if people intend them as slurs. This is how language works. Many current slurs were introduced as terms used in scientific and medical contexts. 🤷

And some insults are reclaimed by the groups being insulted and either cease to be insults altogether (like “queer” or “Protestant”) or are no longer viewed as insults within the community (though they still are from the outside, I won’t give an example but I think you’ll find one easily). Languages are fascinating living organisms!

I don’t get this whole cancel English thing. It’s cancelling a word because of its literal definition and substituting it with an alternative word loosely given the same definition.

Except in the case of “plus-sized”, I think that holds some actual negative context. It sounds like an insult because you’re calling someone obese, but you think they’re so obese that you need to be cautious about it.
