I’m asking this sitting on a replacement bus, with the radio being played loud by none other than the driver himself (speakers everywhere on the bus), regularly getting static/hitches at bumps while annoying ads are being as obnoxious as possible.

At one point one of the passengers decided to listen to their own phone’s speakers instead. By instead, I mean as well.

To me it feels like fuck all changed, but it might be just my observation.

It’ll have about as much success as the law that says no cycling on pavements.

Who’s going to enforce it? People who play their slop videos and music out loud on public transport aren’t the most considerate people to start with. They’re not going to care.

      Agreed.

The law is largely enforced by consent (it has to be) and the public won’t consent to this.

I would probably expect it to take effect over weeks and months rather than instantly.

I’ve got several weeks coming up with 4 hours of train travel every day, so I feel I’ll have a pretty good idea by the end of that!

I don’t think it will ever actually be enforced, so there needs to be an allowance for citizen justice instead.

I will try again just once more (I’m also waiting for a response from the company who I have addressed these concerns to). If the reported case happens again without any intervention (I had the pleasure of listening to a full volume show for 40 minutes played by a passenger’s phone right behind the driver) then I will take matters into my own hands.

Option 1: sitting down right next to the offender and watching whatever they do from very close. If they invited me for a free audio experience then the video experience must be free, as well.

Option 2: I will just sit down right next to them and blast my music at full volume, as well. Above the Weeping World and Winter’s Gate are great albums.

I don’t see how it would be - or at least that wasn’t meant to be. If you mean the linked page then it’s just a reference. Previously this would have been just some rambling about some people being obnoxious. But now that it’s made kind of official, I really hoped that I wouldn’t have to deal with these every day. At the moment I’m dealing with these every day, but now I know that there is a fine for that AND still nothing is being done, as I don’t really see how anything could be done anyway. I just got a tad disappointed.

It seems broadly decent to me. My biggest disagreement is that the penalty is a fine, because the severity of that scales inversely with how much you can afford the fine, but I’m not sure what a suitable alternative would be

While there is certainly going to be an issue of patchy enforcement like the utterly charming experience it seems like you’re having, I think that’s an unfortunate but necessary consequence of not requiring drivers be the ones to confront passengers. For the sake of them being able to safely focus on their actual job, some dickheads will continue being dickheads unobstructed, but less of that is still an improvement. The guidance does suggest that the driver is indeed subject to this as well

I’ve sent an enquiry that was half a complaint already. I also mentioned I don’t expect drivers to pay less attention to the road/tracks, but I don’t really see how this could realistically be enforced. And if it can’t be then I really don’t understand why they even bothered to make this rule/law to begin with.

Maybe I just live in a rough area, but loud phones and people littering and misbehaving is literally a daily occurrence here.
