I understand why AIs struggle with letters, because they see each word/subword/phrase as a numbered index in a token dictionary.

But what I don’t get is how stubborn they are about it. Every single time I see an AI fail to count a number they will swear up and down they are right. They will stop being agreeable assistants and fight tooth and nail for the fact that seventeen has three 'E’s.
