I don’t think bot link posts are good for this platform. I think original content is useful, but links back to Reddit just makes this the shittiest possible Reddit client. Best case scenario it clogs the feed, worst case it actively pushes people back towards Reddit. If anyone disagrees, please let me know why.
Agreed. all of the bot replication content I’ve seen on Lemmy getting automatically copied from Reddit has been hard to engage with because the titles aren’t informative and the comments are awash with bot replication comments with no engagement from Lemmy users. I understand the urge to pump up the content here but I think the replication bots actually reduce the ability to engage and enjoy Lemmy.
The question I would ask is, what do people value a out the fediverse and the threadiverse? Personally, I like being able to engage with excited and interested users. The replication bots are noise standing in the way of this

Yeah, that’s stupid. Like, i could understand if it’s memes, but AITA is interaction based sub, so like, why?
As much as it may seem like pointless spam, it does end up helping the viability of Lemmy. Many people will not hang around a place that is empty or awash with “testing to see if this federates” posts. Same reason all the other online services start by reposting content from elsewhere and make fake accounts. The illusion of a vibrant community is what helps makes it a reality.
Completely disagree. I use things like lemmit.online to have a picture back into communities that don’t exist or aren’t as vibrant on Lemmy.
We shouldn’t care if posts bring people to reddit or not. This is its own link aggregator… why are we being political about it? Saying what should or shouldn’t be posted or visible (in this context) is ridiculous. It makes us no better than a reddit admin saying they don’t like something arbitrary.
If you don’t like a bot posting reddit content block it on your user account.
If we block it at the instance level: I’m out. There are too many Lemmy political conversations going on honestly.
I think it should be community-wise rather than instance-wise. So community can fully ban/restrict to some amount per day bot posts. Also, you can disable bot posts in your settings.
The weirdest posts, to me, are the ones migrated from r/askreddit. Whats the point? You’d have to go to reddit to see any of the redditors answers, and the person who asked the question will never see any of the answers here.
While I was originally ambivalent, I’ve started blocking lemmit.online communities. There’s just way too much spam coming out of there and nobody is engaging with it at all. It’s just a firehose of inanity.
The solution is not to block it at an instance level of course, those who find that content useful should have it. Just saying what I’ve done and my thoughts on it.
It would be nice to have this content being posted to the Fediverse instead of Reddit, but we aren’t there yet. So while some can be posted here without linking to Reddit, like memes, other posts can’t be done as easily.
These other posts are someone’s original content, and should be attributed as such. In time I hope they will start posting it here as well as Reddit (and eventually, just here) but until then this is the best compromise. We should not be stealing and reposting content here without attributing the authors of that content. That’s just bad form.
I fully agree. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to me that we would drive any traffic to the site at all.
Just to add my two cents on the subject. I personally feel June 30th should be a clean break. Walk away and don’t look back. I understand some people feel the need to archive the content elsewhere and to pump up the content volume in the fediverse but the bots feel like spam.
if you are referring to the lemmit bot / instance, you can block it. it’s creator created it for archival purposes. but is not very smart.
I’m not sure they should be banned, but I’ve definitely been blocking every spambot I encounter. It really does nothing but clog the page with similar posts, which don’t get much engagement since they’re all so rapid-fire
