Then Stockholm maybe isn’t your best bet, nor Gothenburg even though slightly better. The bigger cities empties between July 1st and August 14th in favor of summer cities and vacation houses.
With only two weeks I’d recommend staying in the south. Lund is a great option and the southern west coast is probably among the best Swedish summer has to offer.
From Lund you are a stone throw away from Malmö, easy transport for a day trip to Copenhagen.
Follow the coast north and visit Helsingborg with a must visit to Höganäs and Kullaberg with great views, beaches and an amazing food culture.
Going west from Lund you have Österlen, beautiful views with everything from local farmers selling produce to restaurant and shops. All you can ett berry picking with raspberries and strawberries sweeter than you’ve ever tasted before.
Shoot a DM if you’re interested in specific spots

Lund seems to be 100% a dead town in the summer when universities are closed, though, so OP would have to travel to do anything except go to a grocery store (almost…).

10 min by train to Malmö. Super close to Lomma beach. Cheaper to stay than Malmö. Easy with car and parking for moving around.
Restaurants stay open.

Lousy recommendations. Bigger cities are not empty. Lund is a university town, so that means minimum action. The only thing you got right was Österlen.
Definitely visit Stockholm or Gothenburg, OP. Aside from the historical cities that they are, you are close to the archipelago in Stockholm and Smögen in Gothenburg.

I’m actually amazed how much effort you put into getting OP to follow your personal opinion. I could never imagine be that invested.
The west coast of Skåne has the most visitors and the most national tourist during the summer. But I guess the majority is wrong?
Everything visited by locals close up for the summer. Even some nightclubs shut down.
Sure, visit larger cities for the touristy stuff.
Cndymountain at 2023-12-29 04:55:02+00:00 ID:

Tbf while I agree in general that Skåne is wonderful in the summer Lund itself is completely and utterly dead in the summer from my experience.
HerpFaceKillah at 2023-12-29 04:56:52+00:00 ID:

Someone has to call you out though, as I feel you are misleading OP. That’s the only incentive.
“Everything visited by locals close up” What? You just making things up. Yes some night clubs might be closed during summer, but what about the ones that open up just during summer. You make it sound like Gothenburg and Stockholm are dead towns. Stockholm outmatches the others in terms of # of tourists.
https://www.tripplo.com/se/turism-i-sverige-turiststatistik-resestatistik-och-resetrender
Stockholm is more than just touristy stuff that you see in the main road down in Gamla Stan. You have the archipelago, all the historical buildings, national museums etc.

I prefer Gothenburg over Malmö, much more do and see in Gothenburg. If you get a day ticket for the local transport, meaning you can go out to the islands and enjoy them.
https://www.vasttrafik.se/en/Tickets/day-tickets/zone-a/
Yes Stockholm is nice, you have the royal museum and Wasa but I find it too hectic.
I would Gothenburg, then train to Stockholm and then boat to Gotland and Visby.

If you visit during spring/summer I would recommend a visit to Gotland, an island in the Baltic Sea. It´s an hours flight from Stockholm. Gotland´s “capital” Visby is adorable and ancient with buildings and a city wall from middle ages.
I would not recommend Malmö, it’s nice for an afternoon but not more than that. If you plan to continue to Denmark though, Malmö could be worth a stop, but not otherwise.

I don’t know. Even if I’m from Skåne I’ve rarely been to Copenhagen but I think it is “better” city for tourists.
At the moment Sweden is a cheaper (except for alcohol I think) so it might be worth it to stay in Malmö and take some day trips to Copenhagen. (Depending on your economics).

I actually would prefer Malmö over Gothenburg. It’s more beautiful and I find people in Malmö friendlier than in Gothenburg. Malmö has a good selection of bars and restaurants. Beaches are much nearer and better than in Gothenburg. Weather is better in Malmö during summertime. Also commuter rail system is really good around Malmö, it’s easy to get to other smaller cities and towns in under an hour. Copenhagen is also a stone cast away and it’s cheap to get there.

I’m surprised nobody mentioned Uppsala yet. It’s a beautiful old town close to Stockholm with rich history. Stockholm is a must of course, especially Skansen.
Dalarna area (Mora for example) gives a very different vibe.
Lookup rune stones and “hällristning” (overview map), they are in many places in the southern part of Sweden.

Or do visit but simply be aware that many people in Malmö have different backgrounds.
Make sure to try the falafel while in town because it’s simply not made the same further north. There is also a bunch of true local cuisine to sample (although I’m not the biggest fan of the Scanian cuisine tbh).

If you want to experience culinary and cultural stuff, I’d recommend going to a smaller town.
Lidköping is really pretty during summer, you can go bathing in Vänern, sit at the café at Skogshyddan and enjoy the view of Vänern from the outside while munching on fika (Coffee and a sweet treat) while the kids play at the mini golf, bathing or just running around.
Limtorget, located very close to the Resecentrum (train/bus station) has a small square with some very old buildings that survived the fire in 1840’s something. You can stroll around, have a look at Ajax (if it’s open, it’s a small mini museum where you can see how it looked in the 1800’s and how people lived. It’s kinda cool tbh!). If you want to hike and explore, there’s a small trail going around the twon near the waters called “Strandpromenaden” which basically means: Beach Walk.
Or if you want to have a great view of the city town: Råda (it’s outside of Lidköping but easy to take the bus). Or Kinnekulle utsiktstorn. You might need a cab for that though.
You can also visit Läckö Slott, it’s kinda like a museum with a guide to show you around the castle where they talk about how people used to live. Also: You can see rock carvings there as well! :D
But enough of Lidköping, Gotland would be my second tip! It’s absolutely gorgeous during summer, there’s a lot of people around the summer and it can be a bit expensive due to that. You can go there by boat or plane, the latter has a shorter travel time.
If you enjoy tea, you should def visit Kränku, which has one of the best teas there is. It’s a fun shop, when I visited it, it had a combination of arts and crafts and tea. I loved it!
Almedalen (a park) is beautiful to have a break at when tired. Very green and lovely. Also: Gotland might be very busy due to Medieavel Week, so people dress up and go roleplaying, markets, songs and whatnot! (I’m not much into it so I don’t know what date it is at, if you want a hotel you might want to avoid those dates as it’s extremely popular and hard to get a place to stay at).
Gränna is the town of candy canes. But that’s basically it. Not much more to it.
If you enjoy seafood: Smögen. Close~ish to Gothenburg. Lund is also very pretty, the central park with the Botaniska trädgården which is free to visit if you like plants :D
I haven’t been to Malmö much, except for their awesome crafts store Drewex which has cheap artist supplies. And Sci-fi Store (which also has two other stores located in Gothenburg and Stockholm).
Soooo… Those would be my suggestions if you want to experience more of a cultural view. Sweden is pretty famous for it’s fika, there’s café’s everywhere.
Food wise it might be a bit more difficult since we kinda enjoy our fast food such as pizza, thai food and hamburgers.
What you should try out is going to a small foodtruck/park grill and order a tunnbrödsrulle or a half/half which is mashed potatoes, strips and sausage. Usually with some kind of “röra”, like shrimp, onion and sourcream or something like it. Ofc, it’s up to your liking, you can have mustard and ketchup too ;)
If you go to a restaurant, most offers pancakes or meatballs or nuggets to kids so it’s very accommodating towards families.
But like I said; If you want to experience the Swedish culture, visit some of the smaller towns instead and avoid the bigger cities. It’s easy to take the train or bus to the destinations and if you feel unsure, just ask away! People are always eager to help a lost tourist unless they’re tourists themselves :)
Oh, and most elderly speak English as well, maybe not so much in the smaller towns but there are exceptions of course, but teens are usually fluent in the language so don’t be scared if you don’t know the language :)

Much has already been written in this thread.
I would recommend that you clarify a bit what you are looking for exactly. What type of culture are you interested in? Just watching the general vibe of the city life in general? Going to specific clubs? Also, does family mean that you are couple, or does it mean that you have kids? Perhaps not the best idea to bring your kids to a night club :)

If you end up going to Stockholm, I suggest that you do a tour with the historic but modernised steam-powered boats still doing regular traffic, it’s a great way to see the archipelago. Waxholmsbolaget has S/S Storskär, S/S Norrskär, and M/S Västan. If its your thing you can book a spot at the onboard restaurant on S/S Storskär.
Strömma kanalbolaget have some more organized tours that might be preferable to foreign tourists.

If you really want to experience the culture and if you can, then you should try to push your vacation forward a bit so that you’re here for midsummer (21th June). Basically most of Sweden heads out to the coasts/archipelagos to eat, drink, swim and sail. With plenty of odd zainy traditions/ceremonies thrown in the mix.

I know you said you’re not into museums, but I would highly recommend the Gamla Linköping open-air museum. It’s like a historical model of the old town center made out of the actual buildings that were once there. Has locals actually living in it like any other district, so it’s not a theme park. Some great shops that sell hand made things and a rather idyllic café. Often hosts minor cultural events.
