The head of Russia’s parliament said he plans to submit legislation next week that would allow the state to seize the property of “scoundrels” who criticize the war in Ukraine.

Vyacheslav Volodin, speaker of the Duma, an institution controlled by the Kremlin, said he planned to submit the bill on January 22.

“Anyone who tries to destroy Russia, betray it, must be accordingly punished and compensate the state with their property for the damage caused,” he said in a Telegram post on January 20.

The bill, if passed, would be the latest in a series of harsh measures aimed at stifling any dissent inside Russia as it struggles on the battlefield in Ukraine.

No, it’s genius, see? You take their stuff to boost the treasury, then you criminalize homelessness. Once they’re in prison, you recruit them for the meatgrinder at the front, so you’re getting new soldiers too! /s

The “Russia has more freedom than the US” narrative is almost as confusing to me as the idea that Trump is someone you want to represent you. I know people think this but I just can’t understand how they also are able yo navigate the day to day requirements of life.

Like, how do they determine what food to eat? Nothing but Pizza Pops eaten thawed but cold? How do they survive?

Instance blocking is a wonderful thing. I have gone weeks without thinking about tankies (until this comment).

Conservative leadership is cancerous to a country. In Russia’s case, it’s terminal.

I feel terrible for the normal (e.g. non-conservative) Russians. I hope the remaining normal people can flee the country or avoid conscription.

The right wing had realized that they can justify a lot of malfeasance just by looking “strong and decisive”.

Well I guess they’ve got to do something. Russian casualties are something like 4 times more than those of the American military in its entire decades-long participation in the war in Vietnam 50 years ago. With so many of the angry patriotic men dead or on their way to death, at some point the remaining population will be getting more and more anti-war just by attrition.

Hot take: when Russia totally disintegrates, the US should take it over and turn the whole thing into a national park.

And then as a bonus action stick a bunch of military bases right up Chinas ass.
