Those that benefit from it spend a lot of money on trying to make sure the majority of people don’t realise it’s fucking them over

It took me a long time to even register that as food

World News@lemmy.world•Ukraine blows up Russian data centres and immediately and mysteriously online talk about Germany’s Far Right AfD virtually disappears.English
7·2 days agoA lot of noise that reform UK bots have also gone quiet, so I’d be surprised if there’s a far right pie they don’t have their fingers in

movies@piefed.social•Which movies are much better than their trailers suggest?English
7·3 days agoMostly because I thought the trailer made it look like total crap, but Civil War turned out better than expected, though it’s far from what I’d call amazing or anything
I try to avoid trailers for things I already want to see as best I can these days tbh, had too many things spoiled in various ways over the years
Well there goes the final vestiges of traffic I guess I was giving them
Welcome new lemmings arriving on the wave of this particular fuck up
I’m no connoisseur, but I love me some AV gear with a VFD display
Reminder these people know full well the implications of such a photo, and will have done a lot to avoid such photos ever happening
If you see one, there’s probably a thousand they avoided
Me causing it with kombucha instead of beer for a change

techsupport@lemmy.world•[audio cassette player] Are both or only one "axis" supposed to drive the tape?
6·8 days agoI think the word originally comes from boats if I’m not mistaken!

techsupport@lemmy.world•[audio cassette player] Are both or only one "axis" supposed to drive the tape?
15·8 days agoOnly one of the spindles will be active at a time, the one collecting the tape from the other, if the player has an auto reverse mechanism it’ll switch between them, if not, it’ll just be the one
If you were curious, there’s also a capstan and pinch roller that you won’t be able to see that is responsible for holding the tape onto the tape head and moving it along, so it’s not tension from the collecting spindle that is dragging the tape through everything.

PC Master Race@lemmy.world•Shout out to the PC components that haven't gotten more expensiveEnglish
23·9 days agoI vaguely remember reading that they have literal ARM cortex chips in some of the most modern case RGB controllers
If we can get to an SPI and connect some kind of display, it’s conceivable that we could run DOOM, right?
Everything in moderation
The average person wants to be eating around 2,000-2,500 calories in a day unless you’re trying to put weight on or cut weight
Carbs shouldn’t make up more than about 50-60% of that
If you’re eating half a loaf of bread a day, you’re gonna have a bad time even if it’s good quality bread
9point6@lemmy.worldtoHacker News@lemmy.bestiver.se•"I'm Embarrassed on Behalf of the Tech Industry"English
1·9 days agoWell the percentage of low quality shit is dramatically increasing because the people shitting it out don’t know the first thing about building software.
That and the more established large contingent of people see software as a means to, directly or indirectly, extract money from people and not solve problems

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Its crazy to me that no one is saying "if rhe AI is doing all the jobs maybe we can spend more time with the family and children we supposedly love."
2·9 days agoWell even under the current framework, we just need enough people to consistently vote for left wing (i.e. not liberal and obviously not conservative) candidates, who will seek to protect workers from this situation through a variety of ways (e.g. stronger social security to eliminate the need to labour for survival, nationalisation of the companies taking the labour so the public benefits, wealth redistribution from those who have already enriched themselves on the back of others’ work)
Failing that, history gives some examples of more extreme measures that can be employed

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Its crazy to me that no one is saying "if rhe AI is doing all the jobs maybe we can spend more time with the family and children we supposedly love."
8·9 days agoThere’s two main reasons:
If the thing that takes the labour away from the workers is owned privately, it will not benefit the workers.
If we do not drastically change how the economy works, people not being able to work to exchange their labour for income means they starve and die

United Kingdom@feddit.uk•BT strikes deal to rescue troubled TalkTalk from administrationEnglish
10·9 days agoSo BT now trades as BT, EE (itself the product of T-Mobile & Orange merging), PlusNet and now TalkTalk
Would be much less problematic if it was still publicly owned; thanks again Thatcher…
