You’re looking at a set of unequal scales and saying they should be equal, while refusing to place more weight onto either side…

Hard to say that the right to be heard is objectionable imo
Significant proportion, but a minority still.
But yes it’s not racism alone, also confusion, selfishness, disinterest, spite, partisanship, a long list of reasons
The only thing your actually saying is that it’s racist, which is a gross misinterpretation of the word. Racism as a form of harassment or degradation can only effectively apply to a minority or marginalised group, it requires a power dynamic to be in play.
Saying that giving a horribly treated minority group the power to have their voices heard in law is racist is double think, it’s a perversion of the term racist.
You have been misled, and your happy about it because it means you can be righteously wrong
Preferably ones that are lesbians, but like, not the kind that dudes like
I don’t know… just can’t trust this guy since his glowingly positive cyberpunk launch review
Society is very natural, OUR current model of society is sadly not
Wow, 9 years ago!
Good stuff
Yep, that’s the root of the ‘how long do you spend thinking about the Roman Empire?’ Meme right?
It’s some of the earliest popular records of reflexive thought and philosophy, available to us because it was recorded, and still the same shit we’re struggling with right now
Yeah I think that’s about right, our capacity hasn’t changed this quickly, just the menu has changed to suit a quick fix appetite.
People can and will still focus on longer form content, but maybe that’s their day job, so they want a bit of a release from in depth activity or ‘important’ information.
I think there is a real danger here in some form… think about how you’d answer the question ‘what did you do on the weekend?’ That could easily be nothing or it could be I watched a great series called severance that explored the concepts of labour and our work and home lives as human beings
Yes behaviourally, no empirically.
You get a positive dopamine reactive from viewing multiple short form content pieces in succession, you get an arguably more valuable serotonin reaction from viewing a more in depth piece and maybe feeling like you learned something.
How you’re affected by these feelings of satisfaction will influence your behaviour. I recently compared mine and my wife’s weekends, she’d watched a lot of short form content and couldn’t remember a thing, felt empty from it, I’d watched a series of a tv show and could talk about the story and concepts.
But that’s not all there is to it, Plato argued that the written world would dumb people down because they no longer had to remember things and pass them on vocally, maybe a decrease in the requirement for individual cognition, but obviously an overall good.
Edit: edit was messing with me so I couldn’t add this til now. I’m just a drunk guy enjoying dinner and browsing Lemmy, what you’re looking for is the simple answer, the dopamine hit, a minimal conversation. Put your attention span to the test and look into some open access research on the subject, it’ll be fun! And its all that seperate us from the YouTubers that we venerate so much

Great vid on the undecided leftist position, interviewing Celeste Liddle.
I agree with so much of this but personally I have trouble believing in any value of the referendum failing, so still a Yes for me
It started what, over a decade ago? Think about it in context, it was the first fantasy show to be given a huge budget and weight behind it, the first to be given the ‘prestige television HBO’ treatment.
Don’t feel like you need to make a huge commitment, it’s fairly focused and you can take what you want from it.
Don’t care about the hype at all, people who make media their personality are not who you want to emulate, enjoy it or don’t it’s entertainment
I hear you friend, it’s rough out there.
What you can do is take local action in your community to improve things, don’t let discrimination happen within the reach of your arm and voice, don’t let people suffer under your sight.
Take what positive action you can, that’s all you can do. That’s how change is accomplished, you can’t hope to see an overarching system of people in power change things drastically for the better, that’s not how systems of power operate, but you can make a change
Oh I really doubt many are boycotting it, just poking the anthills that are their fanbases and communities to keep them engaged
Try to balance idealism with realism my friend, that’s my advice anyway. Strive for the perfect, but don’t refuse the good
Yes I agree it’s incrementalism, but it’s a grain of sand in the good side of the scales.
I see the strongest detractors of the voice being conservatives, not the groups saying it’s too little. In my opinion, and maybe I’m being more cynical than you, is that if people do not support this small step, there’s no fucking hope of anything more significant being supported any time soon.
So like I said, it’s not much but if it’s defeated I see nothing but harm coming from the loss
Most likely very little (that’s why I said it’s a tiny step in the direction progress). I think it’s extremely high profile and has public focus, that makes it different to most advisory bodies.
Also true what your saying about it going bad and being stocked with shills.
Again I think it’s an action, which to me seems better than no action. Particularly because I don’t think a No vote results in increased indigenous support, but does result in emboldened bigots and conservative affirmation
I don’t know folks, sure it’s a token step but it’s something ffs, a No vote will have no positives I can see (just listen to conservative assholes saying they’re sick of hearing acknowledgement of country, and they’ll be back in power soon enough). Whereas a Yes vote brings us a tiny step closer to actual progress…
