6·3 months agoI’m a massive fan of the audiobook versions of the Magicians series, which I consider to be among the best narration performances from the hundreds of audiobooks I’ve listened to. I gave up on the tv series halfway through episode 1. Should I give it another shot?

Television@piefed.social•Zach Braff Says Scrubs Will Have 'A Lot More' Dr. Cox If Renewed For Season 2English
7·3 months agoIf anyone is skimming through this after seeing it on the “all” feed, and thinking “huh… I used to like Scrubs”, you should 100% check out this revival version.
It completely captures the same vibe and humor of the original, but with the now older cast. I was worried it would be disappointing, just relying on nostalgia to make it work, but it has completely won me over.

Wait… are those movies not the same universe? I haven’t seen either.
QuinnyCoded is the OP of this thread. I’m guessing your client indicates this with the white box.
The person QuinnyCoded replied to (aeharding) is probably a mod (I’m guessing?), making their name show up blue in their client.
Update: I figured out that @aeharding@vger.social is the dev for Voyager, the lemmy client modeled after the Reddit app “Apollo”. So their name shows up kind of purple/blue in the Voyager app (which is my preferred client as well!).

Technology@lemmy.world•From millions of dollars to under a grand: The dramatic fall of the NFTEnglish
1·3 months agoNo judgement intended, and I agree! Trust me when I say that I have an unhealthy amount of money “invested” in headphones and amplifiers. I saw way too much of myself in both sides of that comments thread to not laugh.

“I need a thing to make suckers out of morons”
…
“You should sell them audiophile shit”
…
“Well… some audiophile shit is ok… up to point… after that, you’re def a sucker!”
…
“Actually… you’re not a sucker at all if you spend a bunch of money on this shit. Here, take my money!”

A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•Borrowing money against their stuff to get more stuff to borrow money...
633·4 months agoThis is the process, extremely simplified:
- It’s 1970. You inherit $10M from your rich dad who worked hard.
- Buy $10M index fund stock.
- Borrow $10M against stock.
- Live tax free off that $10M loan for 30 years (you can do that because you started in 1970 when it was cheap to buy a house).
- Your stock is now worth $58M (avg 6% per year for 30 years)
- Your kids inherit the stock at its current value and immediately sell $10M worth to pay off original loan. They pay no capital gains tax because the stock barely moved in the time between when they took ownership and selling it. All of the value growth since original purchase in 1970 is now tax free. The kids now start with $48M.
- Repeat
Obviously, there is more to it than this. For example, this does not account for interest in the loan, or diversification of investments, or ability to hire accountants to maximize on the process.

News@lemmy.world•Millennials are giving up on the thought of ever buying a house and experts estimate fewer will become homeowners
4·6 months agoIs it possible to take out another loan and use that to pay off the student loan, then declare bankruptcy for that new loan? I’m sure there must be a rule against this, I can’t be the first to think of it.
People…don’t just uninstall the apps when they do this. Go leave a 1-star review in whichever app store you use, and say it’s because of these nagging notifications. 1-star reviews are the weapon with which people can punish poorly behaving devs.
This is a great one. It’s been in our holiday movie rotation for years and it’s always a hit.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why do Americans pretend they're not broke when most Americans are in debt?
3·10 months agoLarry Ellison likes controlling Oracle and being a billionaire. Rather than selling stock of Oracle to fund his lifestyle, he instead borrows against the value of the stock. As Oracle appreciated, he got to keep the gains he doesn’t trigger capital gains taxes.
I never really understood this. He still has to pay the loan, and he isn’t doing that with his symbolic $1/year salary. What part am I missing?
