I am owned by several dogs and cats. I have been playing non-computer roleplaying games for almost five decades. I am interested in all kinds of gadgets, particularly multitools, knives, flashlights, and pens.

Unfortunately, our cat who would snuggle with him passed away last year. Our remaining cat almost never lets him that close. (We will get him a kitten before too long.)

Meanwhile, he makes do with his humans and his stuffed koala.

If anyone in the house, including the other animals, is feeling down, Denali will bring them his koala and sit it up against them. He wants everyone to be happy.

  • I think you’re doing the right things. I am commenting because your dog looks so much like our Denali.

He is half Siberian Husky, quarter German Shepherd, and quarter Akita. It always amazes me that dogs with very different breed mixes can end up looking so similar.

It sounds like they have some other traits in common. Denali is very smart and can open almost any latch. Fortunately for us, he likes his crate. One day, when my wife was struggling to close one of the latches, he closed it for her with his tongue, just to be helpful. If he wanted to open it he would open it.

I’ve had several dogs that were very independent (including Denali) and they can be a real challenge. My only suggestion is to reach out to your vet, if you haven’t already. They often have good suggestions about behavioral issues.

I wish you all the best!

  • We were fortunate to have a producer/director who felt strongly about safety and was willing to spend the extra time necessary. A lot of the time, especially for productions that are running on a shoestring, everyone is pushed very hard to reduce the time and cost to an absolute minimum. The low pay selects for inexperienced armorers and the time constraints means that the armorer is constantly being pressured not to “waste” any time. An armorer who is believed to have “slowed down” a production may be fired and will have trouble finding more work. That is what happens everywhere when money is more important than people.
