That’s very possible! I mean as a user I also do like stability (had to instance hop quite a few times when I joined fediverse due to them shutting down) but also see resiliency and strenght in being able to spin up an instance of a platform we are all familiar with. When people leave reddit they don’t have similar alternatives with many users, but on lemmy/piefed we can always migrate and stay on the same platform with different rules and administrators.

Of course that’s simplifying the whole topic, but I’m not that worried about fediverse. But you are right of course that for new users who are on the edge already this might be a big dealbreaker. That’s why I always suggest bigger instances first. Once you are comfortable with fedi/threadiverse you can migrate to a smaller instance (I did exactly that once I figured out how this all works). I know lemm.ee shutting down probably made a noticable chunk of people give up on fediverse because we didn’t see any instance completely fill the void that lemm.ee’s weekly activity left.

This topic has had a lot of discussion, but backup plans are good indeed. Lemmy.wtf is small though, so I wouldn’t worry about it and I believe Meldrik is coming back :) what happened with feddit.de was tragic. I wonder if they ever found out what happened to the admin.

I’ll add for info: I’m on android voyager version 2.37.2 and via a sopuli.xyz account, I can see all the posts/images on ich_iel.

I live in a very safe country, but kinda been scared of this for years so I keep some stuff always in my backpack that I have at work and at home with me (not as prepared as you might think, but it gives me comfort to have more than what fits in my pockets).

I’d take my backpack, run to fill my water bottle if there was an easy opportunity and try to get underground as fast as possible.

Best case scenario: doesn’t hit in my vicinity.

If I live I have to still possibly survive holed up under a crumbled building until I can be rescued and this might take awhile. If I die instantly then yeah, don’t have to worry about that anymore.

Worst case scenario: I am heavily injured and stuck under rubble. I prefer not to think about this.

One of the online resources that really helped me in the beginning was from deutsche welle: https://learngerman.dw.com/en/learn-german/s-9528

Another one was “coffee break german” podcast on spotify. Slow, easy and enjoyable podcast that helped me get used to speech!

dict.cc has been awesome online dictionary between english and german, and https://www.duden.de/ for e.g. figuring out the article of a noun.

I also extensively use browser tools on my learning path and try to read stuff online since I can translate and instantly take notes. Pretty neat that you have an extension to do all that and that there’s an API you can use. I use my Joplin notes but might have to consider something similar…

And yeah resources are plenty it seems and that’s good. German also has plenty of online resources so I’m happy, but sadly many other languages don’t have much yet :(

I struggle with german as well, mostly because I sometimes assume things that just are wrong (when I’m guessing the meaning of a figure of speech).

That sounds like a good plan. I can recommend writing them down on a paper with a pen to reinforce your memory.

And yeah - apps are convenient but my experience with learning through apps wasn’t the best. A course book helped a lot (but that does require more self discipline I admit).
