I think a LOT of these people are being sold off into slavery or re-deported to their home countries (Trump is notoriously using Ghana as a middleman to deport people, especially Africans, to their home countries in violation of protection orders), where they’re being jailed, killed, or tortured (which is literally what those protection orders are trying to forestall).

Oh no, just like the War on Drugs, this is pretext. Trump’s trying to claim any small vessel exiting Venezuelan waters is “drugs” so he can have seeming pretext for an invasion. He’s super pissed Maduro got elected, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he uses an occupied Venezuela as a launching pad to try against Brazil, because he’s also super pissed Bolsonaro wound up in prison.

Of course, this assumes that he lasts that long. Most of this is driven by Trump’s ego specifically, and I doubt the impetus for war would survive much longer than he does.

They’ve been WANTING this ever since Kennedy. Democrats rode that wave for almost a decade and created a whole slew of incredibly beneficial programs in so doing. There’s still a part of the collective GOP psyche that’s pissed that Reagan didn’t get gunned down, that Bush II didn’t get hit with those shoes, and that Trump didn’t get assassinated in Butler, because it’s an INSTANT way to generate sympathy and pretty much guarantee that you get your way for at least a little while.
