I feel like you are overlooking the fact, that Australia GOT invaded by the Brits. The isolation did not protect them. It slowed down the change between them and others. Cultural, economic and technical exchanged helped many countries. Change often has a negative side to it, but I think the “gradual” change of exchange is more welcome than the sudden change of invasion.

You first have to define what social media is without meaning nearly everything. Forums already did all the social stuff. What they did not do was having an algorithm distribute content (except maybe newest firstor ‘hot’ first).
