For thousands of years, since Jesus was alive, himself and many before him prophesized the end of the world. They continue to warn others of their doomsday visions as they get older, and older, and eventually die as elderly men in their beds.
The apocalypse is an enduring fixation of the human mind. I don’t think any of us will live to see it. And if I’m wrong, well our problems are over anyway.
I’m more concerned about when socialism will be achieved.
Do they need to coup? It’s already a dictatorship of capital with no left, not even an opposition party.
Also a blatant coup destroys the illusion of democracy. U.S. elites do not want that.

Some people are saying that this is in preparation for an upcoming military operation but Trump escalating the Iran war this close to the midterms seems like such a disastrous course of action to commit to for the Republicans.
My first instinct is because they’ve lost and are hemorrhaging money on all this stuff so they’re abandoning it. But on the other hand, the middle east is a critical lever of world power. I don’t see U.S. imperialists so easily abandoning the most energy rich region on earth.

I am in the process of getting a degree in healthcare so that I can leave the U.S., I graduate in 2027 and will need to work in the field for a few years before I can travel internationally but once I can, I am leaving and never looking back.
I am an hour in and I will finish it but as of yet I have not gained any gems from this discussion. A big part of me wonders how these three guys can sit and have such a long and meandering conversation without getting up and walking out of the room out of frustration.
Some interesting conversations take place in the beginning about the U.S.'s rise to global hegemon, then Wolff asserts that we are entering an anticolonial period of history. Possible. Things do seem to be leveling out as the U.S. empire declines and more and more countries are able to assert their sovereignty and deal on more equal terms with countries like China, Russia, and Brazil. There is a long road ahead on that front.
They are all lost as to what the future of the left is in the United States. They discuss how there is not the unified working class that Marx predicted would come into being. They continue that without these working class there is no power structure by which the people can pursue their interests.
They are unhappy with Zohran Mamdani’s tenure as mayor of New York City, believe he has betrayed his roots and has to a large extent been absorbed by the democratic party machine.
They spend a lot of time highlighting what they like about Bernie Sanders in contrast to Mamdani who in their assessment has not capitulated to the democratic party to the same extent, though they did grumble about Bernie endorsing Biden and then Harris for president.
I was actually shocked to hear that Norman Finkelstein went door to door canvasing for Zohran Mamdani. Finkelstein is now disgusted with how Zohran has turned his back on pro-palestine protestors and the many people who helped him get elected without so much as an explanation for why he has chosen this course of action.
A lot of discussions of the DSA. Their opinions are generally favorable, they say the DSA has gotten very good at electing candidates but is not yet so good at holding those candidates accountable after they are elected and start to conform to the democratic party.
Another interesting moment was when Finkelstein, reflecting on Cornel West’s campaign for president suggested that West emulate Sanders and speak less about himself when campaigning, to which West said he would not deny himself even for “a billion dollars”, an impressive admission. Then West criticized the Black Panthers for being “atheistic”.
I will finish the podcast later. I do not think it is essential listening for anybody. But if that changes in the second half, I’ll admit that I was wrong.
I look forward to the day when the U.S. no longer dominates global culture, and actual leftists from around the world are given a platform to speak.

The western left has accomplished absolutely nothing, precisely fucking ZERO, yet western intellectuals think themselves the vanguard. They’re not even aware of how irrelevant they are. The future is being forged in China.
There is no viable left in the U.S., I know this makes me sound like a lib but there are many trans comrades in my life who have had their lives substantially damaged by the Republican party. The war against Iran was brazen imperialist aggression and Iranian people have suffered tremendously due to Trump’s arrogance.
The Democrats are the less destructive party. Things will deteriorate slower under democratic rule. I am largely influenced by “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” type thinking. Yes the Democrats are capitalist, yes imperialist, but the Republicans are outright genocidal towards trans people and immigrants.

The world needs it. Capitalism is worse than ever, and thus Marxism is more relevant than ever. Capitalism is now poised to destroy the environment upon which all life depends if it is not overthrown immediately.
The fact of climate change should cause every thinking person to be opposed to the system which produced it: capitalism.
