A few weeks ago a Spanish tourist got kidnapped by IS sympathizers and was saved by the Azawad and returned to Algeria. These incidents likely made the Mali government not trust Algeria, and not communicate with it, so it didn’t tell Algeria “Hey we’re going to fly a drone close to your borders” because they might suspect that Algeria supports the separatists and will warn them beforehand, so when the Algerian AA in the south saw an armed flying object getting close to the border without warning and they shot it down. The drone type is a Bayrkatar Akinci which costs like 30 million dollars, both sides edit posting and calling each other puppet regimes and terrorist supporters.

Algeria has half a million Touaregs and unknown number of Al-Qaeda sympathizers and it doesn’t want to anger them by supporting a side in the conflict in Mali.
