What are some good alternatives to Protonmail? I’m talking companies that don’t exploit their users and also that don’t support unsavory politicians. I’ve been looking for one (I was not impressed with that post from the Proton CEO either). Thanks.

One problem with Signal is that it can be difficult to connect with someone who is on there.

I’ve run into this a couple of times myself. And I’ve had friends run into it too. We know for a fact someone is using Signal, but you can’t find them in the search, even though you have them in your contacts with the correctly formatted number.

Personally, this issue has become a stumbling block for getting people I know to use it more.

  • And a hugely overpriced pastry/cookie company.

My wife gets the occasional Starbucks gift card from work of friends, so she saves them up and then me, her, and the kids go there (so it used to be about once every 9-10 months).

Used to be that you could get small coffees, hot chocolates and a little snack for each person for about $30. Now to get that same stuff it’s like $50. Suffice to say, we’re going there even less often now. Which I’m fine with, since I don’t like Starbucks.

  • Those are fair points. They don’t need to block all targeted traffic. They just have to be enough of a threat/pain in the ass for transportation and insurance rates to go up to an uncomfortable level. It’s all about threat and perception.

Sure, the US air force and navy could bomb the shit out of their artillery placements. But given how (relatively) cheap and effective drones are, that might not be as effective as it seems at first.
