RWBY@sh.itjust.works•Hydrangeas In Bloom Ch. 1 - RWBY FanficEnglish
2·18 hours agoOh, lol, I opened up the original post last night before going to bed so I could read it and didn’t even check this community to see it was posted here. I just left a comment on the original so rather than repeating the whole thing, I’ll just say what I concluded with:
Yeah, it’s a little rough – there’s some awkward phrasing here and there, a little disorganized in terms of prose – but still technically competent. I’ve read a lot of fics which required me to gloss over typos and bad grammar every other sentence or just batshit insane turns in the narrative with each additional section. This is just, like, home-grown bullshit, what with the FFXIV OCs and Miku characters. I can’t say I’m immediately captured by the premise or anything – I tend to read RWBY fanfiction for seeing takes on canon characters – but I’m mildly intrigued to see where this goes, if it’s going to be more than a typical adventure story.

1·18 hours agoThere’s a handful of RWBY AUs on youtube specifically – probably the most popular (if the most controversial in this effing fandom) is Fixing RWBY by Celtic Phoenix. As a fan myself, I highly suggest it, it got me to cry for Vernal of all characters. It’s not fully animated, more like a slideshow with script-like narration, but each volume of work has slowly had more and more artists on the project to the point that the latest one (Volume 7) is like 90% original art (which includes occasional animations) and original music.
Another fairly prominent one is RWBY: Reversed Fates by Judgemental Critter. It’s presented in much the same way as FRWBY – narration over paper dolls using all of Critter’s own art. I remember liking the first season well enough but I’m behind and haven’t seen her second season yet.
RWBY: Evermorrow is another well-known one; it started as kind-of an audio drama with a slideshow of pictures but by now it’s nearly fully animated, if a little rough around the edges.
RWBY: Dust Queen was a highly-anticipated fully-animated project to bring a fanfic of the same name to life, but recently ran into some drama issues and if we ever see it again, it won’t be for a long time. (◡︵◡) Episode 1 still got made and looks gorgeous, but also sadly the project lead (the original author) took down the fanfic so you have to search for backup copies if you wanted to read what was upcoming.
There were two “RWBY OVAs” by Cake Station which were kinda fun and look exactly like Poser-era RWBY, but they were from years ago and I don’t think any more are currently being worked on.
As far as Remnant’s Reclaimer goes, it’s a bit of a relic from early in the fandom (seems to have been written just after V1), and it was never finished, but everyone who reads it absolutely loves what there was. I’m actually kinda quoting someone else when I mention “THE SACRED TEXTS!” meme, as that was their reaction when I brought up the name in conversation.

6·1 day agoWhat Alexstarfire said. If you have any sort of RWBY merch yourself you might consider using that to try and establish common ground. If nothing else you can test the waters with something like “cool shirt, is that a show you like?” – that gives you an out in case they’ve never heard of it and just got it secondhand or because it looked cool.

1·1 day agoFWIW, I think you should go ahead and post it here ʕっ•ᴥ•ʔっ♡
I don’t think writing tends to get much interaction on social media sites (or like, just in general given the sheer breadth of written word on sites dedicated to this type of stuff) but it would be nice to see varied content in this community. I myself wouldn’t have across what I’ve gathered are “THE SACRED TEXTS!” of RWBY fanfiction (Remnant’s Reclaimer) if it weren’t for someone talking about it in the r/RWBY weekly fanfic thread.

2·1 day agoOh, man. Did you ever post something to FF or AO3 or somesuch?
Sorry I didn’t even notice this new comment 'til now ( ◡_◡) I’m trying to drum up activity in this community and I didn’t even pay attention.
Didn’t even know proton had a chatbot, tho offhand I can’t remember if I’ve set up a paid account yet. Been too busy and mentally strained the last couple of years to even keep up with all my emails, I’ve still got >100 unreads (not the important ones).
Also I appreciate the bit of self-awareness in your rant. People have become so dogmatic nowadays there’s not a lot of that going around. Also glad to see someone else pumping DDG.
Tho I myself have just made the jump to Lemmy specifically because old.reddit has become locked to lurkers. I even still have a reddit account (which admittedly I hadn’t really used to do more than vote and search for subreddits since the API changes) but I’ve never wanted to use it on my phone so now the mobile reddit experience for me is completely blocked off. Just kinda feels like invoking old.reddit now after they locked it behind an account is a bit off the mark.

Hope and Positivity@sh.itjust.works•The Planet Now Has More Trees Than It Did 35 Years Ago
4·2 days agoIt’s reports like this that do actually give me hope for the future, though the study seems to be from almost 10 years ago. I’d be curious to see updated results, and I’m not saying this to be a doomer – I do believe (on my good days) that on the whole, the efforts humanity is making to slow loss of established habitat and re-growing habitats that were already lost or in jeopardy should show a fairly neutral or even positive trend – I just wonder how the last decade may look in comparison to when these stats were reported.
Humankind is incredibly good at figuring out solutions to problems and kind enough to help nature bounce back when we overtax it. Humpback whales were hunted near to extinction just half a century ago (less than 5,000 individuals in 1966). Today there are near estimated near 100,000 and indications that their populations are increasing, and are listed as Least Concern for conservation efforts. We absolutely can and are helping nature adapt to and recover from the changes we’ve made to the planet, and we’re only going to get better at it. It may not look the same as when we arrived, but we’ll still help nature thrive around us.

Games@sh.itjust.works•any good indie horror game?? not cashgarbEnglish
3·3 days agoSeconding this suggestion as I’ve actually played it. The scares are really low-key, too (more on the psychological side) so even my little baby ass was able to get through it alright.

12·3 days agoConsidering you’re specifically asking for horror games, I would suggest clarifying what you mean by “no nsfw” – because there’s going to be a lot of horror games that don’t contain any nudity/sexual elements that would still qualify as NSFW due to gore, body horror, and other disturbing imagery.

Emulation & ROMs@sh.itjust.works•F3 2026 - Free Fangame Fair (Announcements & Trailers) - ROM hacks, Translations, And Standalone Games.
2·5 days agoThat actually sounds fantastic for me right now. I made a resolution this year not to buy any more games† when I have so many unplayed games in my library plus all the retro/hacks/fangames/etcetera that I’ve been playing. I’ll admit most of the time I fall back to Pokémon ROM hacks on my retromajigger, but I’d love getting to see more varied and interesting projects to try out. So many of these are just pure passion projects, too, which warms my heart a little. Thanks for the link.
† Which I did fail, but rather than completely give up I moved the goalpost to be kinder to myself and actually work towards accomplishing something: this year I’ve only spent ~$5 on games for myself, $10 if I count the copy I gifted to a friend (Dome Keeper, btw, while it was on sale, very fun roguelike would recommend)

2·5 days agoI’ve only really been tangentially aware of these for the past few years – I think I may have been recommended one of the first when it was Nintendo Fangames Direct in like 2020 – but these showcases fill me with so much joy. Someone else put together a sort-of response video to showcase a few more outside of the heavy Nintendo focus, but either way I am loving that mods, ROM hacks, and fan games are starting to see more love these days.

Patient Gamers@sh.itjust.works•Weekly Recommendations Thread: What are you playing this week?
3·5 days agoThere was one (1) spot that got me seriously stuck in Portal 2, I think about halfway thru? Here’s hoping you can work through it better than I did (I had to look up the solution).

I think you shouldn’t discount the immense amount of cultural pride that many people put in their region’s cuisine – not even just national pride, even, as many groups will look down on each other despite being from the same country and eating the same foods just because they see the other as preparing it “the wrong way”.
