  • There are layers to being liked:

    1. Are you nice and pleasant around people? Always do this.
    2. Are you agreeable and easy to work with? It really depends on you and the job, but here you have to be smart.
    3. Do people respect you? You have to be honest and good at what you do, while keeping a careful balance of the second point.

Balance is hard and sometimes you may just find out that the issue is that the workplace do not deserve you and you need to move on.

From Marx discussion on relative value in Capital volume I:

(…) in so far as the linen itself is an object of value [Wertding], it and the coat are as like as two peas. (…) By means of the value-relation, therefore, the natural form of commodity B becomes the value-form of commodity A, in other words the physical body of commodity B becomes a mirror for the value of commodity A.19

    1. In a certain sense, a man is in the same situation as a commodity. As he neither enters into the world in possession of a mirror, nor as a Fichtean philosopher who can say ‘I am I’, a man first sees and recognizes himself in’ another man.

I think there could be stated an analogous dual relation between art and material reality, maybe perhaps already made elsewhere.

Many leftists in position of privilege should reevaluate the discrepancy between their idealism and their lack of support for material changes to the present material reality. Sure, it is easy to be part of the global north and believe in their own “freedom” (mostly the absence of violence afflicted to their socioeconomic class), while at the same time being part of exploiting and bombing the global south.

If we are going to be idealists, ask this: How many lives are lost every day due to the free exploitation of labour? How many people starve in a world of plenty or are outright killed in conflict over ownership of resources? Opposing material change is the idealist condoning murder of the innocent proletariat due to the aesthetics of action looking bad. This is the liberal perceived moral high ground.

Many good answers here, but one also has to factor in that not all labour is socially necessary. With rising surplus value and extraction thereof, there follows also a rising inequality leading directly to more people becoming more or less servants of the capitalist class.

I would argue that labour of this type, whether that be managing contradictions arising from the capitalist mode of production or the placating of rich people’s whims and needs, is not socially necessary. At the very least the product of this effort ranges from insignificant to detrimental for the proletariat.

Resistance since the uprising of 1959 has persisted under the current Dalai Lama, a “potent force despite decades of propaganda, political crackdowns and education drives aimed at undermining his authority”, living in exile in India.

What authority are they talking about? Are they arguing that education should not be offered and that instead theocratic leadership is what is most important when considering human rights? I think rather the real propaganda comes from the west in favour of a feudal theocracy.

First off, I enjoyed your superb explanations and critique. Secondly, I am baffled by your immeasureable patience and non-hostile replies. Lastly, I will let this be a reminder of how deep the capitalist propaganda reaches into the minds of even (seemingly?) literate people.

Thank you for your effort o7

  • Let me add in the following about my country, Norway, whose material conditions I know all to well: There is way too much wealth disparity and rising poverty, but this infographic does not reflect a material shortage of food, of which there is on the other hand an over-abundance of to the detriment of the global south. Recall that we produce food for a billion more people than what exists, yet a billion starve due to the global north’s over-indulgence and waste.

The main reasons for the rise in death to malnutrition are eating disorders such as anorexia. This reflects a wholly different contradiction which we should focus on instead of misrepresenting material reality.

EDIT: After some reading it seems the rise is due to a change in the policy of journalling deaths. These are probably old people not eating enough because they are in the process of dying. The important bit with regards to where starvation actually causes death, and not merely corrolates with it, remains true.

It is American exceptionalism to disregard the fascist suppression of the proletariat on the basis of having your own very special holiday. Also because of the blatant disregard for the international labour movement.

I am not, but if I were I would probably point out that the capitalist class have co-opted this as well and replaced the material contents of the, ehrm, “holiday,” as you call it.

To take advantage of large numbers of potential customers with time to shop, Labor Day has become an important weekend for discounts and allowances by many retailers in the United States, especially for back-to-school sales. Some retailers claim it is one of the largest sale dates of the year, second only to the Christmas season’s Black Friday.[40]

Well, but what do I know? Maybe the international May day is flawed and that actually American exceptionalism will reshape the mode of production by going on a shopping spree on their “holiday”.

EDIT: I realize that you might be confused about me calling May day for Labour day, which is solely a direct translation from what we call May day here. I still stand by everything of the above though.
