As much as I like to shit on AI, it has gotten rather poetic lately.

If you add that these bullies were given high-paying blue collar jobs, cheap houses, and wives to abuse freely, it’s no longer an analogy. The Trumpist boomers literally had this happen. When this system broke they reacted to it like the selfish, hateful idiots they are.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Has the scientific community ever reconciled with the fact global warming is going to happen and there is no stopping it?
5·2 days agoDefunding is perennial and global, even if it’s not a targetted action like in the US. Consider for example that in the last 25 years the number of PhDs doubled while the funding of the National Science Foundation stayed flat. In the EU the situation is better, with funding at least keeping pace with inflation, but national funding depends on the whims of the current ruling party (I’m in the Czech Repoublic btw where we just elected a right-wing billionaire). Even in the best case the average acceptance rate for a grant is 10 or 15%, but in my experience it’s lower.
As for lawyers being in charge, I mean what’s the degree you go get if you want to enter politics? In China it’s engineering. In the West, almost a third of politicians have law degrees even though the fraction of lawyers in society is much less than one percent.

5·2 days agoGeologist here. It’s really depressing being in the community these days. We’re continually being defunded and we know better than most what a systemic crisis this planet’s ecosystem is in. For some reason we thought it was a good idea to put lawyers in charge of everything instead of experts.

Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•Trump’s War With Iran Is a Product of His Deep Stupidity
1·4 days agoPeople on the Left are scared to use stupidity as a cause for things and so they underestimate its pervasiveness. It would be better if we could just admit that a lot of people are fucking idiots and need to be prevented from making important decisions.

2·11 days agoIt didn’t have the money then, either. It just printed it and ballooned the national debt. I’m sure the global oligarch class will be happy to buy more US treasury bonds while the congress raises the debt ceiling again.

I’m really curious about your idea of a well-executed open world. Can you give an example? Also about the caring about the plot. I could argue your point about not caring about the fate of the central characters for any game.

10·29 days agoOk so to be fair to biology the shape of the curve matters if you want to understand the mode of life and reproduction of the organism. It can be steady and sharply decrease like humans, or it can sharply decrease and then level off in adulthood like turtles. This illustrates different survival strategies: having a few offspring and investing a lot of energy into them so they survive or having a lot of offspring and relying on statistics to ensure a few of them survive. Then you have the worst case, like fish (and in this case, deer apparently), where the likelihood of death is constant throughout your life so it basically sucks the whole way through.
Some of the terminology is from Dan Simmons’ Hyperion series.

I’m really curious how you defend a statement like this. What do you think defines present reality for people?

11·30 days agoHow am I blaming Taiwan? They’re trying to survive like anyone else. What that looks like is dictated mostly by the US, which represents an existential threat to the rest of the world.

Never suggested he didn’t. The average age of Trump voters skews over 50 though.
