Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What’s an obscure but concrete technical fact that keeps creating preventable issues in the real world?
2·1 month agoAlso, the route back to the source host doesn’t have to be same as the route out.
In AWS S3, they’re objects, not files. But you upload files to objects. And can download an object to a file. But they’re not files. Trust me bro.

Yes. Modern software is extremely bloated. But the Apollo computers were operated by people with masters degrees or PhDs. And they trained to use them for over a year. Good luck trying to get the average person to use anything that runs on kilobytes of RAM.

3·1 year agoI had to do this yesterday. First I tried ". Then \", finally \" worked. Which doesn’t make sense. But I’m not looking for answers, I’ve got more Jira tickets this sprint.

1·1 year agoI tried sharpening once. But between my kids and wife I always manage to hit a rock, or brick, or toy. And that really messes up the blade. New blades are like $20-30, I don’t have to spend time sharpening them, and the old one is 100% recyclable. So I’ll spend $20 to save time.

2·1 year agoHonestly just watched some you tube videos. But after the first time it’s pretty easy. Just change the oil, air filter, spark plug and blade.

I’ve had two production systems fail because btrfs didn’t balance metadata and file space like it says it will. It has some fancy features, but do you need them?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Tech support workers, what are your favorite stories from your time in the industry?
15·2 years agoI did support for inexpensive, but commercial grade network equipment. I’d just been promoted to a senior support engineer 2 days earlier. My boss came to me and said “we have a customer who just deployed a over $250k of equipment and it doesn’t work. The customer, sales person and account rep are on the call, we need you to figure it out”. After an hour or so going over their setup we found out our new switch connects to a 3com switch over a fiber line. 3com was out of business at this point, but I managed to find documentation on the product online. It’s fiber ports were FDDI. Our switch only supported Ethernet (No one really supported FDDI at this time.) At which point the sales person said “we’ll just have to replace the rest of the hardware” and the customer agreed.

Oh my god, it’s dumb enough to work.
