World News@lemmy.world•Trump mulls 'winding down' war and leaving Strait of Hormuz crisis to 'other nations'English
4·12 days agoBanning export means everyone would charge import price -0.01$ per unit for their oil products, same as it is now. At least until storage is filled which will take a good bit of time (US strategic oil reserves are basically empty). The US gas prices aren’t high because there is no gas in the US, there is just more profit in selling it overseas.

There is a not insignificant (at least by noise level) portion of the Iranian Diaspora that want the US to invade specifically to install Reza Pahlavi as King. I know because they are harassing my wife on social media when she posts her position which is as you described. You are right in that the majority don’t want a war like this, but Royalists specifically (including the prince of nothing himself ) seem to actually believe that this would be a good thing.
You only have to look at what happened around Huda Beauty, when their Iraqi owner said the same thing you are saying.

1·1 month agoYes. Those are not supported in mumble. For those we’d probably pop up a jitsi session.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Do you prefer XMPP or Matrix powered apps as a discord alternative?
5·1 month agoMy gaming friend group is 8 or 9 people. When you want to hang out digitally, you just jump in our discord and see who is currently playing. You jump in the channel, join the conversation. If the others are currently in a match that can’t be hot joined, someone will put on a stream for you, so you can watch and have an easier time joining the conversation.
Sometimes a friend is playing a game that you don’t own or they want to show you. Easily done with a stream. Streaming on Discord is very useful to us.
We use the webcam feature for our Tabletop Roleplaying Sessions.
One “feature” that Discord has that will be missed by our small community: Being able to see who is in a voice call without having to join it.
We have spent the last week exploring alternatives and it looks like we will be using a combination of self hosted matrix and mumble unless self hosted stoat gets voice very soon.

89·2 months agoIt opens the door for arbitrary enforcement. In the theoretical world where these guys may have to justify themselves in a court of law, they can say “he was in the domestic terrorist database, so we were justified in pinning him down with 5 guys while another guy shot him in the back after disarming him.”

World News@lemmy.world•Fears grow that Trump will strike Iran after US moves ‘armada’ to Middle EastEnglish
1·2 months agoRussia buys Iranian Shahed drones to bomb Ukraine. India and China buy Iranian gas for cheap (because it’s sanctioned everywhere else).
Those would be the major players upset at Iran getting hit.
It also depends on the nature of the strikes. Targeted eliminations are probably not gonna draw much if any condemnation. Large-scale bombing for a sustained duration would be another matter.

World News@lemmy.world•Bob Vylan rapper will not be prosecuted over 'death to the IDF' chantEnglish
122·3 months agoNot familiar with the specific law in question, but for a lot of laws intent and knowledge at the time of crime matter. Eg the difference between manslaughter and murder is a difference in attitude.
I could plausibly see that in this case there is not enough evidence to determine what the mind set was, while the physical action still undoubtedly took place.
Eg in Germany showing the Nazi salute or displaying a swastika are illegal, except for artistic or educational purposes. A case could be constructed in which a defendants intent when showing either the gesture or the symbol could not be clearly deduced. This not enough evidence exists wether a crime was committed, even though the physical action that would constitute the crime undoubtedly happened.
Could be a similar thing is at play here.

World News@lemmy.world•Member of far-right AfD party charged with making Nazi salute at ReichstagEnglish
2·4 months agoObligatory, I haven’t read the article.
Well maybe start there then. Then you would know that there were several witnesses (he didn’t do it in an office in secret, but in the entrance lobby).
You would also know that the incident happened a while ago and the parliamentary review board has already stripped him of his immunity for this case. So a group of his colleagues already determined there is sufficient evidence for such an investigation.
If it’s so easy to slander and cause legal woes, as to say “they did a Nazi salute,
This is true of any crime. Unless you have more than somebody’s word to go on, there won’t be any kind of investigation. Moreover, as an MP the guy enjoys parliamentary immunity unless it is specifically lifted by a committee of his colleagues (which includes members of his own party).
would you still think these circumstances are fine if the claim of the salute were false
Yes. If an MP is accused of any crime, this is the normal process of investigation. Wether or not the accusation is true or not is precisely the point of this investigation.
political party member were arrested because someone disagreed with their ideology
Not just a party member, an MP specifically. And they were not arrested, just formally charged with a crime. And it wasn’t over an agreement of ideology, but for doing a very specific thing that is well known to be illegal (with exceptions for education and art). Now, if your ideology can not be expressed without doing a Nazi salute, then I guess, yes your ideology is illegal in Germany. Wether or not that is good or not, is left as an exercise for the reader.
What if it were a left leaning party member who received the allegation?
Presumably the same thing would happen except any non-AfD party would immediately conduct their own internal investigation and promptly boot any member that actually did this.

Downvote. Reasons:
This is clearly fake news by the LAME STREAM fake news media to damage
glorious leaderthe President’s fantastic work to MAGA.By allowing other users to see this news they start holding the concept of a new variant that is spreading fast in their head and therefore they manifest it. If enough people manifest it, it becomes true (even though it is clearly not, see above).
Even though it is not real, COVID is also just a Chinese hoax that is just a flu so any reporting on it is spreading Chinese propaganda and therefore TREASON (and we downvote treason).
