    The wiki page for Peanut the Squirrel says this

    In October 2024, Peanut was taken, along with a pet raccoon named Fred,[4] from his owner’s home in Pine City, New York by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, following anonymous complaints.

    Government officials alleged that after his seizure, Peanut had bitten one of the personnel involved,[5] and the pets were subsequently euthanized which, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, was necessary to test for rabies.[3][6][7][8] Longo said that they were in the process of filing paperwork to have the squirrel certified as an educational animal when Peanut was seized.[4] He later stated that the decision to kill the squirrel “won’t go unheard.”

    Ignoring Musk I don’t see how this is any different than the Texas California judge going out of his way to send some girl’s pet goat into the slaughterhouse despite protests from every party involved

    Squirrels don’t get rabies, it’s exceedingly rare for them to survive long enough to become contagious to the point that it’s virtually impossible. It was just some excuse for the state and cops to kill a pet owned by a tree hugging wildlife rehabber.
