No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How realistic is it for me to learn Japanese so that I can experience Anime better? How long would it take to learn? Has anyone attempted this?English
3·6 months agoI went to Japan for my honeymoon and so did the obligatory ‘learn the basics’ that I try to do before any trip to a new country.
Getting to a polite level so you can order food, find a train station and so on is relatively easy - probably a week’s effort if you really go for it.
Getting to a conversational level is a whole extra jump from there, however. Definitely a bigger leap than the equivalent in Spanish, for example. Based on this, I’d think that getting to a level where you can follow native speakers doing the exaggerated anime over-acting dialogue would be a hell of a slog and a very commendable achievement.
As everyone else is saying, the written language is very hard to learn, especially if you’re new to non-Latin alphabets. Japanese has three of the damned things and they mix and match seemingly at random (to the eye of the uneducated).
Edit: forgot to say - I like Duolingo for ease of access and I also bought a little phrase book.
My opinion: if you have an interest and an excuse, go for it! Learning more is never the wrong answer.
Just fyi, the song is called “No Time For Caution” and it slaps in every possible way
I’ve been bbq-ing since mid January for various events we’ve hosted, but I’d say the first proper British BBQ day was yesterday for where we are.
Now that I’ve invited people over for this proper first-bbq-of-the-year shindig, the sun has decided to go all shy.

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Nearly 80,000 pounds of Costco butter recalled for missing 'Contains Milk statement': FDAEnglish
71·1 year agoOk fine, yes you are correct in that you can’t advertise a packet of staples as a frozen turkey crown, but you’re also arguing about a different scope. Apologies for speaking like a human on lemmy and not some sort of weird internet law robot.
This is a demonstration of what I’m talking about. To save you the click, this pack of ‘deli fresh’ turkey breast makes no mention of the cornstarch, dextrose or vinegar listed on the ingredients label. ‘Deli fresh’ is itself artistic license, as the product is packaged in plastic and not being served fresh from a deli.

8·1 year agoAny reason you conveniently left out the start of the sentence you’ve quoted? Because the bit you’ve left out changes the tone pretty significantly.
In this particular situation I’d deem positive confirmation to be something like a vegan certification, as opposed to the absence of something.
Combine the absence of milk from the ingredients on something advertising itself as butter with no other distinguishing information and that adds up to suspicion for me.

321·1 year agoITT: lots of people wondering why this is an issue at all when obviously butter contains milk.
It’s because the company can effectively print whatever they like for the name of the product with no regard to the actual ingredients. A consumer needs to know what they’re actually buying because of things like allergies and intolerances.
In this case, and depending on the severity of the allergy, that missing ingredient warning could cause someone a bad case of the farts or something as serious as anaphylactic shock.
This being said, I’d still agree that people not wanting to consume milk should stick to products with positive confirmation that it is milk-free.
When I make my own pizza I use the spare sauce as a dip. Bit of olive oil and fresh basil over the whole thing makes the crust pretty much as nice as the rest.
Also for the stuffed I think you have to do more of a burrito roll type thing so that the edge is trapped by the weight of the stuffing.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why does the "Media Bias Fact Checker" - Bot gets downvoted so much lately?English
687·2 years agoSo the answers in this post are mostly that people are downvoting the bot because it is often wrong and then others defending it by saying “it’s not wrong it’s just based on American politics”.
If the bot reported from a range of sources that reflect a number of different political perspectives I’m sure it’d be more useful outside of the scope of American politics, and therefore wouldn’t get downvoted.
As far as I’m concerned the vote system is working as intended.
The internet is not American. There are no nations on lemmy ✌️

71·2 years agoNormally I’d whole heartedly agree, but to be accused of anything even close to CSAM means he is likely one of:
- guilty, and not smart enough to hide it
- innocent, and incredibly stupid (considering his position in media)
- the victim of a very dark Wile E. Cayote frame up job
Guess we’ll all find out soon enough.

Cars - For Car Enthusiasts@lemmy.world•An Older Everyday Car UK
2·2 years agoGenerally in the UK I’ve learned that what we consider ‘high’ mileage is actually more like average or moderate mileage. This means there’s a sweet spot for cars with around 60-70k miles that are way more affordable than they’d otherwise be, and are usually just as reliable as everything else so long as they’ve been maintained. Like the other guy has said you’ll still pay out for maintenance, but this tends to be cheaper than PCP, lease, or other finance products.
Ex-fleet cars are good for this as they tend to be mostly motorway miles and have been maintained as per contract requirements, so offer a better-than-good chance of being a hidden gem.
The Jags you’ve been looking at are examples of this as a lot tend to be company cars.
From discussion about this with friends, it is felt that exceptions to this rule are things like pickups, vans and other commercial vehicles.
Obviously the usual disclaimers apply - always inspect, look up history, check the service logs and drive a vehicle before purchase. Also, with any second hand purchase there is an element of risk, but lots of dealers offer warranties to protect against the dreaded lemons.

Food and Cooking@beehaw.org•How are you able to cook while working full time through the week? Do you have some kind of strategy? How do you plan your food?
5·3 years agoWe got a rice cooker that can also be a slow cooker, which is another useful strategy. Chop stuff up in the morning, chuck it all in, set it going then eat whenever you want.

Food and Cooking@beehaw.org•How are you able to cook while working full time through the week? Do you have some kind of strategy? How do you plan your food?
6·3 years agoOur primary motivation was weight loss ahead of our wedding, but the guiding principle should transfer: make it super easy. We’ve found that the lowest effort method will win out over all our intentions, so we’re rolling with it.
An example: chicken curry with rice. Also a disclaimer, we have a couple of appliances that make stuff slightly more convenient but I’ll put the alternative down too.
It takes around a minute to wash the rice then chuck it in the rice cooker. you can get microwave rice cooker pots or just use a pot on the stove. Once you’ve got the weights and timings dialled in this produces perfect rice just as you’re going to serve with no interaction during.
Then cook the chicken breast and set a timer for when the rice will be ready. We use an air fryer, but used to use the oven.
5 minutes before the chicken is done whip up the curry sauce.
Then it’s just serving - rice goes in the bowls, slice the chicken and put on top, then pour on the sauce.
Whole process looks like this:
- start rice cooking
- start chicken cooking, set timer for 25 minutes
- go do something else for 20 minutes
- start heating the sauce
- when chicken timer goes ding, put the rice in bowls
- slice the chicken, add to bowl
- pour on curry sauce
Total cook time is around 26 minutes. Total interaction time is around 10 minutes.
It’s also super cheap.
Edit: forgot to mention that you can cook whatever veggies you want in the same thing as the chicken and don’t need to adjust your timings

Haha why is this news
