laverabe@lemmy.worldOPto New Communities@lemmy.world•An index community for LemmyEnglish1·7 months agoIs everyone 5 days behind LW? I don’t quite really grasp how exactly there is a 5 day lag, shouldn’t Lemmy be close to real time? I don’t fully understand what’s going on in those charts but it looks like the delay will be gone in a few weeks/months?
As far as hosting it on a different instance, this is just kinda a playful experiment. If it goes well anyone can copy the list and put it a version of it on their server.
I clicked 5 of the links in the lemmydirectory github/wiki list and all of them the last post was 1 year ago. That’s what kinda sucks about all the indexes is that they’re either the extremely popular communities which show up in the communities tab, or extremely dead communities. The goal is to get a list of extremely active smaller communities and without changing Lemmy source code myself, this is the next best thing I could think of to make a list like that.

Over the past few months, we have carefully recomputed historical votes on posts and comments to remove outdated, unnecessary rules.
I mean on the face of it, maybe they were telling the truth?
But they are a for profit corporation, and that year forward was when the enshittification really began. I guess I just have little reason to believe that they didn’t just alter the algorithm to make it look like there was more engagement than there was.
laverabe@lemmy.worldOPto You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK: The vote counts on reddit are completely made up.English64·7 months agoThis recalculation happened shortly after reddit went closed source. I don’t think we should trust their word that they had all of a sudden ‘fixed’ the problem, whose fix just so happened to really drive their stock value.
It’s not misleading, it’s the reality of what happened. Their public post was PR justification. It was about that point on that every decision they made was for $ and not for transparency.
I hadn’t seen it here, I was scrolling through several pages of new communities and it was pretty much the only new active community.
I was trying to find some new communities to create an index for everyone ([email protected]) - or rather a community designed to allow people to make suggestions and upvote/downvote the actual “curated” list without moderator involvement.
laverabe@lemmy.worldOPto New Communities@lemmy.world•An index community for LemmyEnglish4·7 months agoIt is locked for new posts by design, everyone can comment. The idea is to have 5 main posts and a discussion thread. The 5 main posts can act as a user voted community list, and I can change the layout if anyone has suggestions in the discussion thread.
I figured this would actually be a fairly quick way to build a curated list without any moderator involvement - essentially commenters and voters would create the list.
laverabe@lemmy.worldOPto You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK: The vote counts on reddit are completely made up.English53·7 months agoI figured most people here knew about it, but also just as many probably forgot about it, at least deep in the memory banks. ;)
Yeah that would be the hard part. I don’t know how to do that either. Reddit used to have auto-mod tools but nothing like that exists here to easily automate it.
I may just archive the flag idea until a newer version of Lemmy software adds those capabilities.
This was just a proposed discussion of rules, they’re not active yet so submit however you’d like currently.

MAGA voters complain about Trump's 'depressing' nomineesEnglish20·7 months agoWhat absolutely astonishes me is that the entirety of the country has complete amnesia of the years 2017-2021, as if we’re not about to relive that shitty period x10.
laverabe@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Two-thirds of Americans think Trump tariffs will lead to higher prices, poll saysEnglish1·7 months agoThe next 4 years in the US are going to bring instability to the forefront.
US debt to GDP ratio is already an insane 120% . At some point along this path of ever increasing debt, people are going to see that USD is no longer safe and choose other currencies, or possibly crypto. Bank runs tend to happen all of a sudden when no one expects it. The same situation could theoretically happen in the US.
The reserve dominance shouldn’t be relied upon when we could simply raise a small amount of revenue with taxes on the wealthy to balance the books.
laverabe@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Two-thirds of Americans think Trump tariffs will lead to higher prices, poll saysEnglish15·7 months agoTariffs are a necessary tool, and can be positive in the long run to create revenue and lower trade deficits. They are a regressive tax, but there is some positive to making some imported goods more expensive in the US. It does discourage companies from importing everything. In moderation targeted tariffs can be good.
The debt is projected to be $50 trillion by 2034, so revenue does need to be increased somehow. Otherwise on the current track the US will be unable to service it’s debt.
Ideally they should just tax billionaires, but politically this is a lot easier for them.
The problem with tariffs is moreso on what they’re going to do with the revenue. The surplus will almost assuredly be used to give tax cuts to the rich, and the debt will likely be $50 trillion by 2028, not 2034.

Are there groups of well respected historians that would agree that it has begun? I could only find a few here and there that think it has started.

Plex is “overhauling” its apps with a redesign and under-the-hood “upgrades”
Those who use Plex to access personal media will find that their libraries are in a
dedicated[hidden] tab, while the Watchlist will take up prime real estate in the top navigation section. Plex says it also streamlined the user menu for quick access to things like your profile, friends and watch history. So they’re hiding the entire point of Plex deep in the menu and promoting things that make them money. Enshittification.

Let your voice be heard!English177·8 months agoThat’s not a constructive approach. Doing nothing just means Republicans completely disasemble what remains of democracy in the US.
It has not collapsed yet. Democrats are electing a new chair RIGHT NOW (I don’t know the date, but in the next few weeks).
They are going to elect a centrist. We can stop them. Now is the time.
If the new DNC is progressive and inspires people, it will prevent reluctant Republicans from going full scorched earth.
A progressive platform will win Democrats the white house for the next 20 years. Ask FDR how I know.
This, right now, is the final chance we have to prevent collapse.
Spread the word, share & cross post.

People should have input into the democratic policy platform, but they’re so brazen as to say the “center is where we need to be”.
These people, these few hundred people, are a big problem with the democratic party.
We need to take the narrative back from centrists. It can be done by telling the DNC what to do, not the other way around.
