Why can’t left and right refer to the left and right side of the boat?

Are people really stupid enough to think that naval directions are relative to the human, not the boat?

I don’t think the difference was ever explained in Spongebob; they only used the terms.

Everyone saying the method they use to remember this, but nobody is saying why the terms are used instead of “left and right” in the first place.
