  • I get that AI companies sucking up all the hardware has slowed things down elsewhere, but this legitimately just feels like a major fuckup on Valve’s part. Honestly ridiculous. It feels like they dramatically underestimated the demand for all 3 of these hardware releases this year.

I’m legitimately considering just getting one from a scalper at this point. I know that’s a practice that shouldn’t be supported at all and is a huge part of the problem, but pushing back to December at the earliest is ridiculous.

  • I just started working through these myself a month ago or so, somehow never got around to them after all these years until now.

I know I shouldn’t give Konami money for these but I’m a lazy asshole who just wanted them all in one place on Steam, easy access. Master Collection versions are fine, but there are some mods out there to fix up a bit of the jank (MGSHDFix and MGSM2Fix mostly).

I was told to go mostly in release order, and that worked well enough. Could start with MGS or the MSX classics if you want to go that far back (those also fit in nicely right after Peacewalker).

I will say that playing release order made PW feel really weird, especially since 4 feels much more modern than it actually is while PW is very clearly a handheld game, but by the midway point it legitimately became my favorite so far.

Narratively I took so long to get around to these for a similar reason, just the military theme was offputting, but alongside the camp/pulp aesthetics they’re filled with, they’re very anti-military and anti-nationalism. But still gotta remember the earlier ones especially are products of the times, and Kojima’s never been able to write women characters.

  • It’s such a bizarre idea. Like why not use that aesthetic for a new game entirely? The Link’s Awakening remake had the same issue, though it wasn’t as obnoxiously ugly and actually had some charm to it - why are these remakes going for entirely different styles than their originals, instead of aiming to something closer to the original concept art?

  • The way my current work is headed has me updating my resume already. Everyone’s so deep into AI psychosis, so far I’ve been able to totally avoid using the slop machines but it feels like there’s more and more pressure to use them coming from upper management, and I feel like I’m the only goddamn person in this company rejecting that garbage entirely. Not to mention we’re getting more US government-related clients that I have zero real interest in supporting but have to for my paycheck, but I do get a small bit of satisfaction in that the literal only support rep on US soil (me) is also a filthy commie.

but realistically it’s probably next to impossible to find something in tech at a company that’s staunchly anti-AI, doesn’t support the imperialist machine, and allows full remote positions.

  • Fuck’s Quest II

completely unironically it’s actually so fucking good. it’s stupid as shit but is smart about it, gameplay is incredibly solid, and the soundtrack is somehow legitimately really well done. this game has no right being as good as it is but here we are

my only actual nitpick is that there are 2 “puzzles” that are so absurd that the best way to beat them (especially the harder one) is to lock your frame rate down to like 10. but tbh that’s also entirely on-brand with the rest of the game. funny enough the game calls you out for cheating in an achievement for clearing the second one at all - and it’s also required for 100%
